Fixing the past

Prologue

Dark and light, like blood on a knife. Shiny and bright until splattered with midnight.

Mai watched from her spot under the tree in the palace courtyard. She saw Azula attempt a cartwheel, but she didn't quite stick the landing. Then Mai saw Ty Lee jump into action and do a cartwheel. But she stuck the landing, she seemed pleased with herself, and she turned and smiled at Azula. But Azula was dreadfully angry, and she pushed Ty Lee to the ground. Azula laughed, and Ty Lee seemed hurt but smiled at the sight of Azula laughing. What is wrong with that girl? Mai thought. Then she got sight of Zuko, and Azula caught her eye to this. She went over and started to talk with her mother. Mai looked wearily at Ty Lee, and Ty Lee just shrugged. Then Azula walked back over with Zuko. Mai stood up quickly, straightening her clothes. "So.. what are we gonna play?" Zuko asked awkwardly, "How about target practice?"
Azula said cynically. She grabs an apple and stands Mai up. Mai rolls her eyes but goes along with it as Azula puts the apple on her head. The next thing Mai knows, she is drenched in a fountain. With Zuko on top of her! She blushes, "Awe! Don't you think they make an adorable couple Ty Lee?" Azula mocked, "Yeah, they do, Azula!" Ty Lee said, gravitating towards Azula like a magnet. Zuko stands up in a huff of anger, and he stomps back to his mother. "GIRLS ARE SO WEIRD!" He shouts loud enough for the whole palace to hear.

There they stand, Azula standing there in front of Mai. Azula gets ready to strike; Ty Lee is torn. I can't betray Azula... I-I love-care about her too much. Ty Lee thought, but Mai is also my friend, I-I... I'm sorry, Azula, forgive me. Ty Lee thought, and she jumped into action. She threw a series of swift jabs and watched as Azula fell. With tears in her eyes, she walked over to Mai, ready to defend herself. Ty Lee watched as guards picked up Azula and surrounded them. "So, you both are traitors! I knew it was only inevitable for you, Mai, but Ty Lee.." Ty Lee watched as Azula's angry expression softened into sadness for a brief moment. Then hardened again, "I thought you were different, Ty Lee." Azula said, slightly hurt. "Get these lousy traitors out of my sight!" She commanded the guards, and as they carried them off, Ty Lee looked back at Azula, tears in her eyes. Azula looked away, but Ty Lee saw a single teardrop from her chin.

Azula watched from her position on the ice as Katara moved in the ice and chained her up. Once the ice was gone, Azula screamed. Tears poured from her eyes, and her hair was messed up and cut. She breathed fire from her mouth. Suddenly, she saw shadows of her mother, Ursa, her father, Mai, and all the people she's ever hurt or had hurt her. She screamed and cried, shooting fire from her mouth. She pulled at her chains and mumbled unintelligible words at the shadows. And then she saw a cloud of Ty Lee; her heart ached, and she cried as the shadows whispered all the things she's done wrong to them. Or the things they've done to her. They were reminding her of it all over again. She cried until the shadows went away, and everything went black.

Azula woke up on a hard floor. She looked around to find walls boxing her in on all sides. A small bed in the corner, a bard window above the head of the bed. And a strong-looking metal door. She saw that she was in a straight jacket. She struggled against it for a bit. But eventually gave up from exhaustion. She let out a scream! But nothing happened. She sat down in her bed and fell asleep. When she woke up, she saw Zuko and a nurse next to him. She tried to get up, but she was strapped to the bed. All of a sudden, she panicked. She started to go back to a memory she wished she could forget. But before she did, Zuko screamed at her and shook her. "Snap out of it!" He yelled in her face. She screamed at him, "Listen, Azula, you not well. I think you are so young, being part of this war. It's too much for you. This is your nurse; she will help you. You are here so we can help you." He said, "Where is father!" She shouted, "He is in prison and will stay there for the rest of his life. He has no bending, so he can't escape." He said, "Let me out!" Azula shouted again; he just shook his head and left with the nurse. She continued to scream, "Let me out!" "Let me out!" "Let me out!" She continued for hours until she couldn't speak anymore. She then cried and cried as the shadows from before came back. She screamed and cried as they whispered to her. And she cried and cried until she passed out from exhaustion.

"So what is going to happen to Azula?" Ty Lee asked; Zuko shook his head, "I don't know." He said, "But whatever happens, you can't see her." He said, directing all his attention on Ty Lee. "What? Why?" She asks in confusion, "What happened at boiling rock... Mai told me what had happened. And I think it will only make things worse for Azula's mental state." He said, "But.. but who will help her through all this?" Ty Lee asks, "The nurses will." He said flatly. Ty Lee became angry, "THE NURSES!" She shouted, "The nurses don't know a thing about Azula! The real Azula!" She cried, "Ty Lee!" Zuko shouted sternly, "I am your Fire Lord, and you will listen to me!" He growled, "You are not to see Azula! That is an order." He said Ty Lee was fuming, "FINE!" She shouted and stormed off, stopping only once. "You are just as bad as Ozai." She said and ran off in a huff of pure anger. That night she left with the Kyoshi warriors.
