"That's so disappointing," Luci remarked, adjusting her robe as we walked. Classes had finally ended after an excruciatingly long day full of boring lessons.
"Well, I'm so sorry that my break was too boring for you," I snorted.
"It doesn't even make sense, Alexa!" Mara came in front of us, now walking backwards, "you always have some story to tell us about your break. It's suspicious."
"Mara," Luci started, the two exchanging conspiratory glances, "you don't think... She's hiding something from us?"
I swallowed.
I was hiding something from them. How exactly am I supposed to tell them that I lost it to Tom Riddle? They'd never let it go. My plan, actually, was to not tell anyone about what happened that night.
"Never forget this, Alexa: no one will be able to give you this. Not like me. Understand?"
My head pounded lightly, my mind trying to bury the thought immediately.
Alexa. Athena. Malfoy. Stop thinking about it.
"Fine," Mara spat, "we'll find out one day what your secrets are."
"There are no secrets," I lied, clenching my fist.
"Secrets?" I rolled my eyes, recognizing the voice immediately. "Oh, please tell, Malfoy. I'd love to have some blackmail."
"Potter." I turned around to see the Marauders standing behind me. Surprisingly, they were joined by their friend Peter, who just never seemed to be around these days. James led the pack as he usually did, arms crossed with a wicked amount of power in his eyes. Ever since Potter and I had that conversation outside of the pub, he's been nicer to me. To an extent. I wasn't sure what he meant by telling me what he did, but he approves of me so I guess I'll have to just accept that.
"I'd like to hear what secrets you have too, 'Lex," Sirius smirked, arm resting on James' shoulder as they peered down at me. I couldn't help staring at him for a moment, thinking about the last time I'd seen him.
"How was the rest of your break, Sirius?" I asked genuinely.
"Fine," he waved his hand dismissively, "stop trying to change the subject, Malfoy. Tell us your secret."
"I hate you all."
"Hey!" Remus gestured between Peter and himself, "what did we do?"
Peter played with his hands nervously, not even making eye contact with me. Realizing I should probably introduce myself, I stepped towards him offering a hand. "Hi, I'm Alexa," I gestured towards my two friends, "this is Mara and Luci. You're Peter, right?" Peter nodded, almost looking starstruck before finally taking my hands. I smiled as I shook his hand, "I'm sure we'll be great friends."
"Careful, Wormtail," Potter lowered his voice, "I can tell Sirius is getting jealous--"
"Oh, shove off!"
Sirius pushed James, the situation quickly turning into a fight in the middle of the hall. I couldn't help but laugh at the two as they scrambled on the floor, each trying to beat the other. Remus and Peter began to cheer them on, placing bets on who they thought the victor would be.
"Break it up." Two hands swiftly grabbed the boys by their collars, separating them from each other. "20 points from Gryffindor." I glanced up at Tom Riddle, surprised. His blue eyes met mine as a smile crept onto his face. I quickly looked away, a bit embarrassed.
I'd been actively avoiding Tom ever since winter break. I think I'd only seen him three times since we've come back and every time I managed to escape him before he even noticed I was there. This time, however, I knew that I wouldn't be able to do that. He'd found me.
