Your eyes fluttered open, squinting when the bright light hit you.

You looked around to see that you were in the hospital.

You knew it was best not to talk, since your throat killed and your lungs burned.
You looked next to you to see Akaashi sleeping on a chair next to your bed.

You reached a hand out to him.

You managed to poke his arm that he was using to keep his head on.
His eyes opened and once he saw you, they widened.
You could tell he was crying from his bloodshot eyes.

"Don't talk okay, the doctor said it'd be best if you didn't right now."He said to you as he took your hand.

You nodded.

"I'm gonna go get the nurse, you thirsty? I can get you water."

You nodded slowly, noticing that your head was pounding.

He gave you a weak smile and got up to leave the room.

You took a look around waiting for him to return.
When he did, he had a glass of water as well as a nurse and a doctor behind him.

He looked depressed.

Everyone stayed silent as you took a sip of water, realizing how much your throat did hurt.

Akaashi watched you as you flinched at the pain.

The doctor cleared his throat.
"Hello Ms. L/N.. I'm doctor Hoshi, you gave us quite a fright there. But I do have some bad news..." He talked very slowly.

You nodded to him to continue.

"First, you had damaged your throat pretty badly from the coughing, I'd recommended you refrain from speaking till it heals a bit more."

You nodded.

"Second, the reason you had a cough attack and passed out was because your lungs were over worked that day, were you doing excessive amounts of walking, running?"

Akaashi was the one to say yes.

"Third.." The doctor paused.

You furrowed your brows.

"As much as we are trying our best, unfortunately your lungs can't keep up with you any longer...a transplant is now not an option as you'd be taking a 70 percent chance of your body rejecting them..." He paused.

You felt Akaashi's hand reached for yours and he held on tightly.

"I don't know how to put this gently but...from your X ray scans and from documentation of how long you've had this disease, I'm sorry dear but we estimate that you'll only make it to the end of this year..."

Your eyes widened at his words.
Tears started to fill your eyes and you flinched as the lump in your throat grew and caused pain.

"I would also like to tell you this, I've seen this disease take many lives, and there are certain signs I'd like you to keep an eye on.
One..you'll soon develop bronchitis, a condition where the coughing will become more excessive and aggressive.
Two.. You will soon lose your voice as it will be difficult to speak with your lungs.
And three.. You have now stage three of COPD, it will get harder to do normal activities, such as walking and getting dressed, you'll feel more fatigue and your body will be more vulnerable to the flu, so please bundle up and try not to go outside. Also hospitalization might be needed."

You nodded your head.
You already knew about these things as you have done your research.
But it hurt more hearing it from someone else.

Only to the end of the year?

You looked down at your free hand and realized that Akaashi was gripping your hand very tight, he was also holding back tears.

You tried to give him a smile but he just looked at your eyes like his soul was gone. He looked lost.

The doctor soon left the room and the nurse did her thing to change your Iv and such, before leaving the room.

Akaashi still didn't move, his eyes still looked empty.

You shook his hand and motioned for a pen and paper to write something.

He snapped out of his daze and grabbed some sticky notes and a pen.

"How long was I out for?"

"Two days." He said with a shakey voice.

"Bokuto? My family?"

"Bokuto took a train back home, he had volleyball practice and couldn't miss it, but he stayed here till this morning... And your family is back at home too, I told them to go get sleep and to eat.."

You nodded slowly.

"You should go home and get some sleep too, take my car home if needed.."

He shook his head.
"I'm not doing anywhere. I'm staying here till you get released okay?"

You gave him a weak smile and rubbed a tear off his cheek.

"Y/n.. I promise to make these last few months the best for you, I'll do everything I can to make sure that you feel fulfilled when the time came.. I prom-"

You cupped his cheek to make him stop talking.
You looked into his eyes and leaned your forehead onto his.

You wanted to say something, anything. But the words failed to come out.
For now, you both sat in silence.
