Chapter 9
There are Trips and then there are TripsAubrey
"I don't know what to think." Popping a piece of my poppyseed muffin in my mouth, I frown at the bowl of dough Brynn has set next to me. Sitting in the back of Brynn's shop watching her mix up dough for a batch of her cinnamon rolls, I'm befuddled.
I've stewed in my house long enough, worked like crazy in my garden, finished up my bookkeeping for the month and helped out at the diner so mom could get a couple nights off. Trying to keep myself from overthinking this whole mess, I've worked into the long hours of night. When I do finally get to bed, I'm staring at the ceiling or worse, watching his house just to get a glimpse of him.
I am not some lovesick teenager! I'm a grown woman perfectly capable of taking care of herself. I'm self sufficient, hard working, compassionate and caring. I have friends and family I love, a great career I enjoy, a home I own and my perfect companion in Lump. I don't need a man to complete me.
It doesn't mean I don't want one
It's been a week since I slept with Beck. A week since I woke up with this amazingly tender man and took him to work. A week since he said he'd see me later. I haven't heard from him, talked to him, nothing since I found out about his truck and I'm wondering if he's regretting what happened.
I can't blame him. Finding out that because of one night with a neighbor there's a crazy person willing to trash his truck and freak out over it, that could discourage him. Lindsey does like to screw up relationships. It wouldn't be the first time she's done something to ruin one of us.
I don't think it'll be the last either
"So take your cute butt over to the Inn and ask him. Aubrey, you can't just sit here waiting for him to come to you. Sometimes you have to make the next move." Brynn smiles as she flours up her countertop to roll out her dough.
"I'm not waiting, I just... I don't understand. I thought we were good... friends at least." I tell her and suck on my straw taking a long drink of Coke. "Everything was so easy, normal when he left for the Inn then..."
"Hey Brynn you here, sweetheart!?" The male voice calls through the open doorway as the bell at the door jingles.
Brynn wipes her hands on her towel and walks out to the front counter. "Good morning, Cole. What can I get you, honey?"
"What, no small talk or good gossip today? I'm heartbroken, sweetheart." Covering his hands over his heart he fakes being hurt. Brynn laughs as she begins fixing his coffee. "I'm still your favorite, right?"
Cole has certainly gotten flirty lately. I thought it was only to make Ethan jealous but he's not here, is he? I don't see him. So does that mean Cole has a thing for Brynn? Wow, I did not see that coming. They've been friends forever but nothing else. I wonder if Ethan knows?
"Aren't you cheeky this morning." And I hear a kiss from them. Like a smacking of lips meeting. Woah! "No fresh gossip, and I have dough waiting, so unless you don't want cinnamon rolls today. I have to get back to it."
"Can't stand in the way of those. Fine, I'll let your shortness slide then. Are we still going out next week?" I can just see him leaning on the counter watching her. He is literally scoping her out!
Oh my! I did not see this! Are they sleeping together?
I'm actually surprised Brynn has kept this quiet for so long. That little brat didn't tell me she was getting busy with the hot architect!
