Chapter 35

Georgia

I'm a proactive person. I believe in facing, not just my problems, but my adversaries, head on. I don't mince my words, I mean what I say. I keep my promises and hold others to their word. I can make a snap decision and stick with it. And every time, I protect mine.

Aubrey's state of mind, her broken heart and Beckett's, are on my mind. I can do nothing to change what's happened. That alone pisses me off. What I can do is make certain it never happens again. Not by his hand.

So taking matters into my own hands, I take a little drive. Straight into the city to see a certain doctor. I've accomplished the first hurdle. I've been able to remove him from the hospital and his medical license has been rescinded. He's got a hearing next week and I plan to be right there to make sure the son of a bitch goes straight to prison, without stopping at go.

On my ride to the city, it's not gone unnoticed that I'm not alone. My driver has notified me that the boys are right behind me. Good, I might need bail.

I won't pause my plans because these boys think their old mom can't handle a little prick. I spent more than twenty five years with Mike Bradford. I can handle a little prick. So we continue right along. I don't mind the boys wanting to take a swing. I'll even allow Beckett the first punch. But I get the knockout.

Pulling up in front of the ranch style home, I take a moment to get my bearings. It's a nice southwest style home, desert landscape and not a sign of anyone paying attention. Except for the dog at the front door, held back with a chain around the tree. An animal abuser too.

"Humph." Pursing my lips tight, I might need back up after all. "If that slimy bastard thinks I'm afraid of a dog, he's more of a fool than I thought. He has no idea how to handle me."

Stepping out of the car, I gave the slowing car a glance and an absent wave as I walked with a purpose toward the front door. The dog barked, loud and obnoxious, enough to draw attention if there was anyone around but as it happens, it's just me and my boys.

"Ma! Wait!" Blake yells at me, before I get too close.

The boys climb out of the car and all four come racing to keep me safe. Blake and Beck are in the lead, having jumped from the car before it came to a complete stop. Bringing up the rear is Derrick and Ethan. I do have a soft spot for that one. He isn't mine yet, but he will be.

"What do you think you're doing, coming out here to face this son of a bitch alone? Have you lost your mind again, Ma?" Blake scolds me as if I can't handle this situation.

"I'm doing what needs to be done. And I'm of sound mind, believe me, son. No one crosses me or mine and gets away with it." The anger rose, heating my body and pulsating through my veins. I may be hot with a temper but it only turns my blood to ice in my veins.

"You need to let us take care of this. Cade told you, he's got it under control. Toller is going to prison." Beckett reminds me, not that it's necessary. I'm old but my brain works just fine.

"And I have some things to say about it. I know the balls are rolling, just as I know a man like Toller is more likely to hide under a rock before going to prison." I turn and continue up the walk, only stopping when I have to determine if the dog will be a problem.

Beckett solves that issue. Pulling a couple bones from his pocket, he kneels down and offers them to the now silent pup. He edges toward us, belly crawling as he gets closer and sniffs at Beckett's hand. Staying still, I watch as Beckett charms the dog with treats and long easy strokes on his back. Within seconds, he has the dog belly up and loving him.
