"Get off the bed, Herms!" I yell at my cousin who was bouncing on my bed with her Hogwarts letter in her hand.
"Come on, Rachel. I know you've got your letter too! I can't believe it's all real! Magic is real!" she shouts, leaping off the bed and grabbing my arm, her curly brown hair getting into my face.
"Yes, I've got my letter. I just haven't opened it yet," I tell Hermione, who finally calmed down after much persuasion.
I was a pureblood and the only daughter of the honorable Farrell family. My parents are purebloods and proud Gryffindors. I lived a very magical childhood but Hermione wasn't part of that until now. I was really close to her and I grew up with her since the day I was born. I never revealed my magical tendencies to her until we turned eleven and she got her letter the same time as I did. We became absolutely inseparable since then. She was eleven this year and so was I. Her parents are muggles but little did we know that her mother was a Squib, so her magical genes were passed on to Hermione who now had activated magical powers. But Hermione was still labelled as a muggle-born witch.
I sat down on my bed, Hermione beside me carefully tearing her letter open. She was thrilled to be able to do something she had never done before. Recieving my letter was not much a big a deal as it was to Hermione. I'd expected getting my letter, but she certainly didn't. I open my letter that read -
Ms Rachel Farrell
13 Pollen Avenue
2nd room on the right
I carefully pull out the folded piece of parchment that was written in a flawless handwriting -
Dear Ms Rachel Farrell,
We are please to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Mistress
I fold back the piece of parchment and put it back into the envelope. I get up and go to the living room with Hermione.
"Mum, Hermione got her Hogwarts letter too! When can we go shopping at Diagon Alley?" I ask my mother, who was sitting on the couch in the living room with Hermione's mother, Mrs Granger.
"Hermione was so thrilled to recieve her letter, oh she was," Mrs Granger commented, looking dearly at her daughter who was right beside me, grinning from ear to ear.
"We'll talk about that later, all right honey? How about you take Hermione to your room to play or tell her more about Hogwarts?" my mother tells me, shooing me back into my room with Herms behind me.
I put the letter away in my drawer and flop down into my bed. Hermione did the same beside me. I could tell she was trying her best to remain calm but she absolutely couldn't so she started bouncing around my room a bit.
"Hermione, calm down. It'll be even more exciting when I tell you more about it," I tell her as she was already at my side listening intently at what I was about to say.
"Tell me, tell me!" she leaned in and looked at me with curiousity surfacing in her eyes.
"So Hogwarts is a school for witches and wizards. There are four houses - Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. When we first get into Hogwarts, we are sorted into one of these houses. Gryffindor being famous for it's brave and couragous witches and wizards, almost everyone desires to be in it. Ravenclaw is famous for their intelligent, knowledgable students. Ask a question and they'll answer it for you. Hufflepuff is famous for their caring, loving-natured, all-rounded students. And for Slytherin... they're famous for producing cunning but resourceful witches and wizards. Let me tell you though, nearly every witch or wizard that was in Slytherin turned out bad. At Hogwarts, we'll learn how to cast spells, produce charms and defend ourselves against the dark arts. We can even brew our own potions! I can't wait to start school in September!" I add at the end. I only told her about the houses because it was pretty much the only thing I knew about Hogwarts. My parents hardly told me anything about the school besides the houses in there.
"Rachel, Hermione, we're going to shop for your school supplies. Let's go," I hear my mother call after us.
"Coming, mum!" I call after her and ask Hermione to get changed and take her letter with her. I put on a red scarf and I wear a dark coloured leather jacket.
I step out of my room with Hermione and I see my mother filling her purse with Galleons, Knuts and Sickles. We would be travelling by Floo Powder to Diagon Alley, something Hermione never did. So I walked up to the fireplace and went in. I grabbed a handful of Floo Powder, take Hermione's hand, and shouted, 'Diagon Alley!' before green flames engulfed the both of us. My mother and father came after us and we shot out of a dusty fireplace right in the middle of Diagon Alley.
"What was that?!" Hermione exclaimed, brushing off the dust from her clothes.
"We just travelled by Floo Powder, it's a form of transport for people like us. Muggles can't do it, though. They'd probably get their heads stuck in their own fireplace!" I break out in laughter at my last statement and so did Hermione.
