Chapter 7: Fairytales

"Tulog ka na?" she asked but I didn't bother to answer. Instead, I closed my eyes even though I'm not even planning to sleep. "Sorry."

"For what?" I hissed. I felt the wooden moved, and next thing I knew, I can feel her hand tracing something at my back.

"For saying those things and pushing you to do things just for me," she uttered. Patuloy pa rin siya sa ginagawa niya at hindi ko na lang siya inimik. The old man we saved told us to stay here at their small house or whatever this is. Malugod namang pumayag si Reverie dahil ayaw pa raw niyang umuwi. Malalim na ang gabi, pero gising na gising pa rin siya.

"I get it already. How many times do you have to say you're sorry? Just..." I opened my eyes and stared at nowhere. "... take care of yourself and stay away from trouble from now on."

I heard her chuckled. "So, you do care." Idiot. I just said that for you to trust me. Muli siyang gumalaw kaya nilingon ko siya at nakatingin na siya sa kisame habang ang dalawa niyang kamay ay ginawa niyang unan. "Honestly, I feel comfortable around you, Death. Pakiramdam ko, kapag kasama kita, hindi ako mapapahamak."

"You're weird." Natawa na naman siya dahil sa sinabi ko. "You talked to me as if you knew me. You asked me to come with you as if you're sure I won't do anything that would harm you."

Bahagya niya akong nilingon. "Because I am sure you won't. Or even if you did something that would harm me, I'd ask you why you did it." Every words she said that night, it was deep and intoxicating. I felt like if I go deeper down her depths, I'd drown.

"Seraphina!" My voice echoed everywhere but no one came out. Nakatingin lang sa akin si Ariel na para bang wala siyang planong sabihin sa akin kung nasaan ang babaeng hinahanap ko. "Where is she--"

Nagkibit-balikat lang siya. "You asked her to back off, remember?" Naglakad siya palapit sa akin. "From now on, I'll be with you."

"Man, gross." I made face but he remained calm. Ni hindi ko nga alam kung paano natatagalan ni Seraphina ang lalaking 'to. Maybe because he's her serpent. He's cold and quiet. Honestly, they've been together way back from the start. But I never saw Ariel leave Seraphina's side. So, this is new to me. "I don't need a chaperone."

He smirked. "Don't worry. I hate being with you as well." Napailing siya at ginulo ang buhok niya. That's why we hate each other's guts, because we have the same personality. Damn it.

"Death!" Umalingawngaw ang boses ni Reverie kaya sabay kaming napalingon sa kaniya. Halatang kagigising niya lang pero malawak na kaagad ang ngiti niya. Tumagos ang tingin niya papunta kay Ariel na ngayon ay nakatayo na sa likod ko.

This guy, when the sun came up, he came here just to say that Seraphina ordered him to look after me, and to make sure that I'll do my job. To kill Reverie. And as much as possible, I don't want them to meet. Dahil nakikita siya ni Reverie.

"Hi! Sino ka?!" tanong ni Reverie pagkalapit niya kay Ariel. Tiningnan muna ako ni Ariel at sinamaan ko siya ng tingin.

"I'm Ariel and I'm here to kill yo--" I covered his mouth and glared at him. Fuck this idiot. This is why I hate him. He doesn't know when to stop his fucking mouth. He's too straightforward yet he's naive.

"What he meant was, he's here to guide us," I said to cover what Ariel said. Mukha namang hindi 'yon napuna ni Reverie kaya ngumiti na lang siya nang malawak.

"I'm Reverie Tyler--"

"I know." Nanlaki ang mata ko at halos mapasigaw na sa inis. Fuck you, Seraphina. You gave me an idiot for a chaperone. I shook my head in annoyance and held Reverie's arm.
