Waking up to a loud banging was not what I expected when I fell asleep at the kitchen table. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the time, seven in the morning. "Great, my body is going to give me hell all day for sleeping at the table" I grumbled as I got up to see what or who was making that loud relentless banging.

Opening the door, there stood this man, never noticed him before in town. You see the town has about two hundred people in it, and over the course of the year, I seem to have met each one.

"Can I help you?" I asked him, "sorry to disturb you at such at an early hour, but I was wondering if you have any work on this farm for me?" he asked. I stood there eyeing him up.

"Even if I did, I can't afford to pay you for anything you do, so you might as well keep going somewhere else" I told him, as I went to shut the door, he placed his hand on the door.

"I don't need to be paid, I am not from here and need a fresh start, I am handy around farms and all I require is food and shelter, once spring comes around, I will be gone if you so wish" he said.

"You're serious, aren't you?" I asked him, "yes ma'am I am, I have money so it's something that I don't need, except a fresh start and the other stuff I requested is all" he said letting go of the door.

I know I needed coffee to think straight. "I must be an idiot, but why don't you come in and we will talk about this over coffee" I told him as I turned around and went to the kitchen.

I have no clue who this man is, is he going to kill me? Is this how I met my fate? Or is he real and just wanting a fresh start? I know how that feeling is when you just want to go somewhere, where no one knows you.

I started up the coffee pot and sat down at the table and rubbed my eyes, this man walks in and sits at the table. He looks down and sees all my plans that I have sketched for the farm.

"I appreciate that you are taking time to hear me out and offering me a cup of coffee, I am not a killer so you can rest assured that I won't harm you or steal from you ever" he said.

"My name is Devon" he said as he put his hand out, I studied him for a moment, "nice to meet you Devon, I'm Sarah" I said as we shook hands. The coffee beeped and I got us our coffee.

Sitting down at the table, I took my first sip of the warmth that grazed my senses. I have always loved the first taste of coffee in the morning, it just makes that moment just right even when things aren't.

After a moment, I was still wrapping my hands around my cup, "so Devon, I know you want to help me around this farm, as I'm sure you saw when you came here and seeing these plans that I have drawn up there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

I need to know if you are a hard worker and are you reliable and how much experience do you have and in what" I asked him.

"Well, I grew up on a cattle farm twice this size and I can fix anything and everything that needs to be done, I am very reliable, and you can always count on me no matter what, I know this is just my word for it, but I can only private it to you.

How about we agree on a week's trial and then at the end of the week, you can make your decision?" he asked.

It seemed like a promising idea, to test him in his knowledge around the farm plus even for a week an extra pair of helping hands would really be great for me. "Okay you have a deal, later today we will go into town I want to start on the barns and need to order new shingles and everything with it".

"Sounds great Sarah, and one other question where would I be sleeping?" he asked. I forgot that part.

"When we go into town, I will pick up new bedding and such, I will show you your room now but there isn't much in there at the moment" I said as I stood up and walked towards the stairs.

Devon followed me up the stairs and we turned to the right down the hall a bit, I opened the door to the other bedroom. "This will be your room, the bathroom we have to share, the other one that is just a sink and toilet is downstairs next to the family room" I told him.

Devon walked in the room and glanced around. It was bare, only a double bedframe with a mattress on it that was wrapped in plastic still, a nightstand and two dressers.

He looked out the window and turned to look at me, "this is perfect Sarah, I don't need much really, just sheets for the bed, and I will get a lamp for this room also, so you don't have to worry about the cost, you are letting me stay here so I will buy what I need" he told her.

I smiled at what he just said, this might work out after all, I thought. "Make yourself at home Devon, I must get changed, apparently I fell asleep in my clothes and need to freshen up" I told him as I went into my bedroom and shut the door.

I leaned against the door for a moment, smiling. I actually have a man living here with me for a time, even though it won't lead into nothing, but still he was a handsome man, extremely easy on the eyes.

I went and took a shower and changed clothes, by the time I was done and went downstairs, Devon was cooking breakfast. "I figured I would make us breakfast while you were getting ready for the day, I hope that was, okay?" he asked.

"Thank you for doing that, and of course it's okay" I told him as I got more coffee and sat at the table watching him. He put a plate in front of me, two eggs over easy, bacon and toast, oh I could get used to this in a heartbeat.

Smiling at him "thank you for this, I'm starving actually" I said as I dove into the food, Devon laughed and it was a rich warm laugh, a comfortable one, as he sat down across from me and began to eat his food.
