The next morning, we were heading into town, Steve and I along with Dirk in one car and Eric and Todd in the other. This I had a feeling was going to be an unforgettable trip into town.
Can't wait to see what the hen's reaction is going to be. Each one of these guys, Eric, Todd, and Dirk are all around six foot three to six foot five and all built like bodybuilders.
Not the extreme ones but ones that could still kick your ass no matter what. These boys were lethal. Steve found a parking spot and Eric parked about six cars down.
As usual, there were the hens right where Steve had to park, "this way if anyone is snooping around our cars, you know the hens will pipe up right away" Steve said as he kissed my hand.
Dirk looked confused "hens? As in chickens?" he asked. Steve and I laughed. "Nope you see the bunch of old ladies there that have that disgruntled look mixed with the I've been constipated for a week?" I asked Dirk.
He looked at the old ladies, "okay I can see that on their faces" he said, "well those Dirk are the hens, bunch of gossiping old ladies that have it in for me" I smiled at him.
"Oh, really now" Dirk said with a smirk, and I left it at that, I wanted to know what was going on in his mind, but some days I didn't want to know. We all got out of the cars.
Eric and Todd joined us, "look at that hussy" one of the old women said, "I tell you Bethany, she is a black widow, and she has taken our sheriff to the dark side" another one said.
"Ladies will you give it up and stop being so nasty" Steve told them. Now that was the best thing this morning, the ladies looked like their prune juice was actually made with something sour.
"Well Steven that is no way to talk to us old folk" the one called Bethany said with her old schoolteacher tone. "Well Bethany, I wouldn't have to talk to you in that way if you were nice or just kept your nasty comments to yourself and not direct them at my girlfriend" Steve said taking my hand.
As we started to walk away, "keep seeing that hussy Steven and you won't have to worry about staying sheriff, she will be burying you on your farm" the old hens cackled.
Dirk and Eric along with Todd turned to face the old hens, "listen here, you bunch of old dried-up dust bags, leave Sarah alone. I would be more worried where you're going when you finally kick the bucket which should be any day now as old and decerped as you all look" Dirk said.
I couldn't help it; I busted out laughing. The old hens I think were shocked that someone actually gave it back to them. Steve turned around and had a shake to his shoulders as he tried to hide his laughing.
I mouthed a thank you to Dirk. He smiled and nodded his head, that felt so nice to have a few friends stick up for me. We went to the hardware store to place an order for security lights and cameras, plus a few other odds and ends for the farm.
It was nice, no one made any comments or snide remarks towards me. After the hardware store, we ended up going grocery shopping. I think between everyone getting two weeks' supply we ended up buying out half the store it seemed like.
We loaded everything up between the two cars, and decided to grab takeout to bring home, since I wasn't in any mood to cook, and neither were the guys. So, take out it was.
Standing in line, Eric leaned towards me, "you know Sarah, the reason why Dirk seems so intense with you is because you remind him of his sister who used to get bullied at school almost constantly, he wasn't home during that time, his parents sent him away to boarding school.
So, when he came home one day unexpected his sister tried to commit suicide because of all the bulling. Dirk went ballistic and took care of her bullies and he took his sister to a therapist to work through her stuff she needed to, then he took her away for a year.
She recovered and lives a happy life now with her husband and a few animals. But when Dirk sees people no matter who they are or their age it lights a fire under him and will make the bullies pay" Eric told me.
I stood there realizing how intent Dirk had been toward the hens. Now everything makes since. "Dirk has a good heart, you all do, even though you don't show it much, but I can see it" I told him.
Eric smiled and nodded his head; he knew what I meant and that I took the time to look past their exterior and looked deep inside of each of these men. I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys to hang out with.
Even if they were here to catch Devon, they had become a part of my life and they each agreed after this was all over, they would stay in touch and visit when they could.
I started to not feel well, my stomach was becoming sour for some reason. "You don't look so good" Eric said looking at me. "I don't feel the best" I told him, "I think I'm going to go outside and sit with Dirk and Todd and get some fresh air" I said as I turned and walked towards the door.
I got outside and went to sit next to Dirk and Todd, hoping with fresh air this would pass, my stomach wasn't so hot at the moment. I sat down and laid my head on my arms on the picnic table.
