I brought out the iced tea for us, I added the lemon to his on the side the way I knew he liked it. I do try to show him I care about him and what he does for me, he always checks up every day to make sure I'm good and that no one is bothering me.
He made it known in town that he would not tolerate anything against me, he couldn't stop the talking but he could control other things.
"Thank you" he said and took a sip, "this hits the spot, a perfect drink at the end of the night". We sat there sipping our tea watching the rain dance along the ground.
It was a comfortable silence between us, and that is a must with friends or lovers, endless nonsense chatter is annoying. "Thank you, Sarah, for this, I really do enjoy spending time with you, and no I'm not bringing up you dating me, yet" he said with a wink.
I had to laugh, he was always trying in his way to let me know he's still there no matter what, and I loved that and showed him in my way that I appreciate everything he does.
"I know you want us as a couple, but right now Steve, I can't offer that part of me, I can't say about the future, but I will tell you that it scares me I don't want to lose our friendship and make things weird between us if it didn't work out" I told him.
I wanted to be honest and see where it took me, I also figured he had the right to know where my mind was with this.
"Sarah, I understand that I really do, and I told you I would wait for you, you are it for me and hopefully one day I can show you that I would be good for you also" he said as he took my hand in his and squeezed it.
I squeezed his hand back, and I didn't pull my hand away which I used to do, he deserved something for his patience and for putting up with my silliness.
Steve stood up and helped me up, we went inside to the kitchen and placed the glasses in the sink, "I'm going to head home, and Sarah I respect the way you feel, I want you to know this, but I still won't stop trying to woo you" he said and kissed me ever so gently.
In that moment I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back, his lips were so soft and tender, I opened up to him and his tongue slid in to dance with mine.
After a few moments, I pulled back just a bit, I looked up into his eyes and saw his soul, he was an amazing kisser, I will give him that. I smiled up at him, he wrapped me in a hug, "and that was the best part of my night" he whispered and walked out to his car and went home.
I sat on the swing for a while longer, my body too worked up at the moment to try and sleep, all I could think about was that kiss, I wasn't ready to date, but maybe just maybe I would do baby steps and see where it could take us.
I was willing to do that for Steve, I knew deep down he was worth it and maybe I was ready to try, just maybe.
After a bit I blew out the lanterns and went inside and locked up and went to my room, leaving my door open to let the air flow circulate. Once my head hit the pillows, I was out cold.
Devon was sitting in my room in the corner, which I hadn't noticed. He sat there through the night watching me, before dawn approached, he walked over to my side of the bed and ever so lightly kissed my lips. "You will be mine" he whispered into my ear.
I woke up and there was no one there, it must have been a dream I thought, so much going on my mind is playing tricks on me. I lay there gently rubbing my lips remembering the kiss with Steve.
I could hear noises downstairs and looked over at the clock. It was eight in the morning, I never sleep in, but then again, I never kiss anyone either and that happened.
So maybe sleeping in was good for me, just like kissing Steve was. I laid there smiling while looking out the window. It just dawned on me the power was back on.
I got up and threw on a light summer robe and went downstairs to start the coffee, to find it already brewed and a cup just freshly poured for me, "good morning sleepy head" Devon said smiling as he placed a plate of eggs and bacon and toast on the table for me.
"Oh, thank you so much for this Devon, I really do appreciate all of this" I said smiling up at him. He turned around and made up his plate. After he sat down, we both sat there in that wonderful comfortable silence and finished our breakfast.
Once that was done, I gathered up the plates and pans and did the dishes as Devon sat there with his coffee. "What's on the game plan today?" he asked. "I was thinking of getting started with the main barn, if that's good with you?" I asked him.
"Sounds good to me, we should give our stomachs an hour to digest our food and then we can get started" he said. I agreed with him, plus I don't like to do a lot of heavy work right after eating.
We sat outside on the swing for two hours talking about how we were going to get this done and making sure we had extra tarps to put on the roof in case it started raining in case we didn't finish.
With the ladder in place, we set to tear apart the barn roof, we stopped for lunch and then back at it till the sun was starting to set. Standing there on the ground I was impressed with what we accomplished.
About ninety percent of it was done. We tarped the rest for tomorrow. I will admit working with Devon was a breeze, we laughed and talked while we worked. It definitely made the day go by a lot faster.
We went inside and cleaned up before I started dinner. After a much-needed shower, I threw on a simple and light floral sundress. As I was about to head downstairs, I heard Devon and Steve in my kitchen.
