after the supermarket, y'all put away the groceries and made chocolate cake. You went back to your own house to take a shower, then went back to the Curtis'. By then it was around six.
Pony sat on the couch with the big bag of potato chips. He turned on the tv, y'all were binging The Flintstones tonight. You brought a blanket and snuggled in together. You leaned on his shoulder. Johnny decided to third wheel and sit right next to you guys. Pony and you didn't mind.
A few hours later, everyone had left except for you and the Curtis bros. Johnny said he'd go for a walk, and Dally and Two-Bit went to the Dingo. Steve had gone home, or somewhere. Y'all had a pasta dinner.
"Y/n, c'mere!" yelled Ponyboy from outside.
"Coming, coming," you said. You put on your sneakers and walked outside.
"What's up Pon-" you stopped mid-sentence at a beautiful sight. The sky was salmon pink, the sun setting behind the trees behind the houses. Ponyboy was sitting on a blanket on the grass.
"Sit," he said. You sat next to him.
"Pony it's...wow, I-" you had no words to say.
"I know. I love to watch sunsets. It's real peaceful. And for this moment, being romantic is just an added bonus." You smiled. It was pretty romantic.
You took his hand and held it tight. You wanted to cherish this moment forever. Soon, the sun was gone behind the trees, and the sky was an ombré light blue, darkest straight up above your heads.
"It's gone," you said sadly. "I wish it could stay on the horizon, all pretty like that forever."
"Nothing gold can stay," said Ponyboy.
"Huh?"
"Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower,
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief.
So dawn went down to day,
Nothing gold can stay."
"Wow," you said, stunned.
"Yeah, it's a poem. I never really knew what it meant. I guess it means that, like, the things that are perfect and beautiful can't always be like that forever, cause that's how the world works."
"Yeah. I wish this moment didn't have to end right now," you said.
"It doesn't," said Pony. He put his hand under your chin and pulled you closer. You both leaned in and closed your eyes. His lips touched yours. You kissed.
"Hey Pony, it's your turn to wash the- whoa. Am I interrupting something?"
Pony looked up at Soda then down at the ground. You did the same.
"Soda- I-" Pony stuttered.
"Don't worry. I get it. I'm not Darry."
"Oh thank goodness," you said.
"Don't tell him Soda, please," said Pony.
"I won't. But he's gotta find out sooner or later."
"We'll tell him when we feel he's really happy so he won't yell at us," said Pony. Soda chuckled, then said, "Alright. But Pony, you have to wash the dishes."
"Fiiiiiiine." You and Pony went inside. He threw you a tee-shirt, then went to wash the dishes.
"So when are we gonna tell Darry?"
"Uh..."
"Tomorrow. Let's tell him tomorrow."
"No. We'll have Soda tell him tomorrow and we just stand behind him and look at the ground." You chuckled. "Okay," you said. "Gnight."
"Night." He gave you a quick kiss on the cheek and walked to his room, finished with the dishes. You walked to the living room, but Johnny wasn't there.
"Wait, Ponyboy," you said.
"What?" He turned around.
"Where's Johnny?"
"Oh no."
"What?"
"He went for a walk...but that was an hour ago."
"Oh no."
"Cmon let's go!" You and Pony ran until you reached the park. Johnny was laying near the fountain. He was all wet and there was a large scrape on his arm.
"Johnny!" you both yelled. You ran to him.
"What did they do to you?" Pony said.
"I,l, was w-walking an-and, they jumped me...th-they smelled li-like b-booze," he stuttered. He was shivering in the cold, even though it was spring it was still cold at night, and it didn't help that Johnny was all wet.
"Let's get you back to my house," said Pony.
"Why were they in greaser territory anyway?" you asked.
"They were probably drunk. Those darn socs. One day I'm gonna get em," said Pony.
"Let's get Johnny back," you said. Johnny held on to yours and Ponyboy's shoulders as you helped him get to the Curtis' house.
"Johnny! Oh no," yelled Darry. You and Pony laid him on the couch. "What happened to him?"
"He-He w-went," you sobbed and hugged Pony. He patted you on the back. You let go and sat down on the couch at Johnny's feet.
"He went for a walk and, I guess some drunk socs got to him," said Ponyboy. You were still on the verge of crying.
"Alright, Pony, get him some jeans and a tee-shirt. Y/n is it alright if you sleep on the floor today?"
"M-mmhmm," you sobbed.
"Hey, hey, y/n, don't cry," said Pony. He sat down next to you on the couch and put his arm around you.
"Johnny's gonna be ok, don't cry. Hey Dar, Where's Soda?"
"He went to sleep early." You wiped a tear from your eye. Johnny's gonna be ok, you thought. He'll be fine. Those darn socs, you were gonna get em back someday. Soon, you thought. And then you fell asleep as Darry picked you up and put you on top of the blankets.
