Just blessing you all with a pic of Park Jimin, because why not? XD
When we are young and naïve we assume that our parents are soul mates. And that theirs is the most epic love story of all time. A lot of us are wrong about this but not Jadeline Kim. Her parents actually had an epic love story. Her Father, Wook Kim, came to the United States of America twenty four years ago to pursue his studies from Columbia University where he met her Mother, Monica Charmichael, and fell in love. After four years of dating they decided to get married after completing their education. Her Father was Korean and his family from South Korea was not supportive of his decision to marry an American woman. So after they both completed college, they decided to get married and start a life in New York. A year after their marriage, they were blessed with a baby girl whom they named Jadeline, after her Mother's Aunt.
Jadeline grew up in a loving family. Her parents were supportive and encouraging. She was an only child and had the attention solely on her over the years. Her parents were her best friends. She learnt how to play the guitar from her Mother and how to cook from her Father. Jadeline was quite different from the others at her school because she was neither completely American nor Asian. So she was always left kind of hanging in between.
She did not have much memories of the first time she went to South Korea with her parents. She was only five years old at that time. They went there because her Grandfather was ill. They went to Ilsan-gu, a district in South Korea, where her Aunt had moved along with her family as well as parents.
The best part of the entire trip for her was finding a friend and a brother, Kim Namjoon, whom she called Joon Oppa, she had heard other girls calling their brothers with the honorific term so she started to call him Oppa as well. This was her first connection with anyone from her Father's side of the family.
Namjoon Oppa or Joon Oppa as Jadeline called him back then because she could not pronounce Namjoon and Oppa in one go, was the sweetest boy she had ever met. He was so intelligent and hard working. Jadeline had never met someone so smart. She only had some memories of that trip and all of them had her cousin in it. She wanted to be just like him when she grew up and went to elementary school.
But the trip was not the same for everyone. Her Mother did not feel accepted in her in laws home. More sad news followed when her Grandfather passed away a few days later. They stayed for a month after the funeral and then came back to the States. Jadeline liked her time there. Korean Fried Chicken was the best thing that Korea ever made. Joon Oppa kept in touch with her and they sent each other gifts on occasions and even letters and cards on birthdays.
Jadeline grew up in a bilingual home. Both her parents were fluent in Hangul as well as English. The story of her Mother learning Hangul so that she could write and recite her marriage vows in it always made her heart skip a beat.
The Fall after her 9th birthday was the worst of her life. Her Mother had met with an accident and died after being in coma for 6 days. It was a very difficult time for their family, she knew somewhere in her heart that her dad could never overcome from it and he never did. Their once laughter filled home now had a sombre and cold atmosphere. They hardly talked in the following few months. Until one day she saw her Dad silently crying in his room holding a picture of her Mother, she just silently went and put her head on his shoulder and hugged him. She missed her Mother.
Jadeline started her guitar lessons with her Mom only a few months before her death. Jadeline could play a few songs on it but did not touch a guitar after her Mother's death. She put all her energy into her studies after it. Life was slowly coming back on track. She visited Her Aunt and cousin in South Korea again when she was ten years old.
Her cousin Namjoon Oppa was now fifteen years old. He was the class topper but he secretly wrote songs which he showed her one day.
"Oppa, Aunt will disown you if she sees you doing all this." Jadeline exclaimed.
Namjoon just shrugged it off and replied, "I am not telling this to her right now. This is our secret Jaejae."
"Don't call me Jaejae." Jadeline scrunched her nose while her Oppa only laughed.
"I want to write songs, make music and rap." Namjoon told her. He had a dreamy expression on his face when he was talking about this.
"Well you better find a new family fast because after this news comes out you will definitely be thrown out of the house." Jadeline explained.
But her cousin was not a quitter because seven months after her trip they got the news that he had moved to Seoul and signed with a company called Bighit Entertainment.
Over the course of the next few years Jadeline focused on her studies and competed in Maths Quizzes all over the Country. There was unexplained beauty in Mathematics which allured her towards it.
Her cousin Namjoon had debuted in a boy band which had seven members. Jadeline did not really listen to music because frankly she did not have time for it but she had heard a few of his songs and they were good. However, her Father always heard all his nephew's songs and proudly told everyone of his achievements.
When Jadeline woke up this morning, she immediately knew that something was not right. Because her Father who was usually sitting on his Hospital bed and reading a book was laying down breathing a little heavily. She went to his side and sat down on a chair holding his hand.
"What happened Dad?"
He looked at her and opened his mouth but did not say anything. She called for the doctors to come and check up on him.
Ever since her graduation three months ago, her Father's health had become even worse. His liver was not functioning properly. And two weeks ago he was admitted to the Hospital due to excessive indigestion and vomiting.
While the Doctor was checking him he turned to Jadeline and tried to speak.
"Ca..l...l ....call Namj...oon." He murmured very slowly.
Jadeline never called her Namjoon Oppa she always texted him because he was always so busy but after what her Father said she immediately called him.
"Don't worry. I will be there very soon." These were the words her cousin told her. He always knew what to say and what to do.
And after that she waited. She waited for him to come because she felt lonely and scared. Her Father, Wook Kim, also waited. He waited to see his nephew one more time, maybe one last time. They both waited.
