We jump on our bikes and speed to Joey's house. I look around to make sure no one is looking, and we enter quickly. When I see the hole, I pull the cord off my neck, and stretch out my shaking hand to insert the key. It fits. I turn it.
It doesn't turn.
The key doesn't work.
Then the house shudders briefly. A glowing rectangle appears; the outline of a door. The door slowly slides open, and once it's open all the way, I hear Nicole gasp. It's the city from my dream. Or coma or whatever.
I stick my foot through the door first, then the rest of my body. Nicole follows.•••
The castle mural where I first learned about all this is just ahead. I hurry to run through it... and smash into it. It didn't work. What? Nicole looks at me like I'm crazy, and laughs a little.
"What did you think would happen, doofus?" she laughs.
"It was in my dream... this wall... I walked right through it..."
"Okay Luke, I think your concussion is affecting you right now. How about you sit down for a minute," she coaxes.
"Nicole, no! I'm serious! I was here and there was a sanctuary thing and then everything faded out and..." I trailed off, realizing that I wasn't helping my cause.
"Hey, I believe you. But let's just walk around town for a bit and see if we see anything, k?" She says it like she's talking to a little kid.
"Fine," I mutter, and stalk away.
