Today is the day that Isaac and I are going on a date. Well, we're actually going tonight, at seven, but it's still today. It is now one o'clock and I am in the bath, relaxing. My dad is looking after the twins, their birthday was a week ago. It's been a great week.

...

It is now six o'clock and I am trying to find something to wear on my date. I am currently wearing shorts and one of Augustus' tops. There is a knock on my bedroom door.

"Come in." I say.

My dad enters the room with a mug full of hot chocolate in his hand. He walks over to me and puts my hot chocolate on my bedside table before looking in my wardrobe with me.

"I don't know what to wear." I tell him.

"Anything." He says, I glare at him. "It's Isaac, I'm pretty sure he won't mind what you wear."

"But I want to look nice." I say.

"You always look nice." He says.

"You have to say that. You're my dad. It's your job to say that." I say.

"You're beautiful, Hazel. He won't mind what you wear. Just, be yourself." He tells me.

"Fine, can you leave so I can get ready please?" I ask.

He kisses my forehead and leaves the room.

...

It is exactly seven o'clock when the doorbell rings. I walk over to it and open it to find Isaac on the other side wearing a suit and holding a bouquet of flowers in his hands. He smiles at me and I smile at him.

"You look beautiful, Hazel." He says, gesturing to my white dress and black slide on ballet pumps. My hair is curled and is in a half up half down style. My make-up is minimalistic, just some foundation and mascara.

"Thanks. You don't look that bad yourself. Thanks, for the flowers, they're beautiful. Just let me put them in a vase and we can go." I say as I take the flowers out of his hands, gently.

I walk into the kitchen with them and grab an empty vase off the shelf before filling it with water and putting the flowers in it.

I walk back into the hallway, grab my purse, say goodbye to my dad and the twins and follow Isaac out of the house, closing the door behind me.

...

It is now ten and Isaac and I are currently in Pizza Hut eating dinner. We just went to the cinema to watch a movie we have both been dying to see, it was really good. This night has been really good.

"Did Gus ever tell you about the time him and I played truth or dare?" Isaac asks.

"Nope." I answer.

"Well, we were bored and didn't know what to do, this was before he got cancer. He decided that we should play truth or dare, so we did. So, we were playing truth or dare and I dared him to go outside and shout out 'I've lost my voice, please help me find it' until I called him back in. He did it and it was night time so people were in bed. This old lady lived next door and shouted out of her window for him to shut up, but he didn't so she came outside her house and walked over to him. She then punched him so hard in the face that he fell to the floor. It was hilarious." Isaac recounts to me before laughing. I laugh too, mainly because that is the sort of thing that Gus would have done, but it was funny.

We then settle into silence, a comfortable silence.

"Do you think Gus still likes us, for going on a date together?" Isaac asks.

"He told me himself he wanted us to move on and be happy. We won't be able to move on, I know that. But we'll be together. I'd rather be with you, someone who I know and trust and who my kids know and trust, than be with someone who doesn't know me, and I don't know them. And I think Gus would be okay with that. We're helping each other, and we're as happy as we can be. We know and trust each other. I think he'll be fine with us dating." I tell him.

"I wish he was here." He says.

"So do I. But we have each other, we have the twins, we have everyone else. We'll be okay." I say, smiling.

"We'll be okay." He repeats, nodding and smiling.

When we're done eating Isaac pays for our bill and we leave the restaurant. He drives me home and walks me to my door.

"So, Hazel Grace Lancaster, tonight has been amazing." He says.

"Yeah, it has. Thank you, for a great night." I say.

"You're very welcome." He says. "I'll see you soon."

"See you soon." I say. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight." He says before squeezing my hand and walking back to his car and getting in it. I watch him as he drives away and as soon as he is out of sight I turn to face the door and open it. None of the lights are on, except the upstairs landing one, meaning everyone has gone to bed. So I quietly walk upstairs, after locking the door behind me, I slide off my shoes and get into my bed.

I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.
