"What's wrong?" Sophie asked as I yanked open her car door and collapsed into the passenger seat.
Getting rid of Sam had not been an easy task because he was nothing if not stubborn. I didn't want to go back inside and face my father again but I had to get the beautiful daisy in water. The thought of leaving the daisy out on the porch crossed my mind but just because Sam and mine's love died didn't mean the flower had to. I had to go inside and get dressed anyway because no matter how much I wanted to I couldn't go shopping in my pajamas.
"Nothing's wrong" I said as I buckled my seat belt and thought how glad I was to be getting away from my father. "I just needed to get out."
She eyed me suspiciously before pulling out of my driveway. "This doesn't have something to do with seeing Sam last night, does it?"
"Seeing Sam last night meant nothing to me" I said hoping she would believe it as much as I wished I would believe it.
"So why did you leave early?" she asked.
I glared at her "Is there something you're trying to say?" I asked.
She shrugged and smirked "I think that Sam has more of an effect on you than you care to admit."
"He's your brother and you're biased. Sam's not as great as you want to think."
"Sure" she said as she looked into her rearview mirror making sure there were no cars as she backed up into a parking space in the mall's lot.
After picking up about a million different things, we made our way into the dressing room. Our favorite part of shopping had always been the trying on. Dancing around the dressing room and getting each other's input on each outfit was always fun.
"I think that I'm going to have a party" she said as she spun around in the dressing room, examining the black and white bikini she had on in the mirror. It covered less than two percent of her body. "A pool party, so I can wear this bikini." She looked at me in the purple bikini I tried on. "And you can wear that one."
"And your parents are going to let you have a party?" I asked skeptical. The last time she threw a party, her parents came home to find alcohol everywhere, Sophie in bed with a guy they never met and Sam in bed with me. But I hated thinking about that.
"My parents are going away this weekend" she said. "Did I forget to tell you?"
"You never mentioned it" I said. "So much for telling each other everything." I twirled around in the bikini I was trying on and thought about what Tyler's reaction to it would be. He'd probably like it. But then Sam made his way into my thoughts; he would love it. I retied the straps and pressed him out of my mind instead thinking about how Ty's eyes would go wide and he'd pull me to him. I swallowed a lump in my throat.Sophie pulled her hair up into a pony so she could see the bikini better.
"I want it to be this Friday night. It'll be huge." She looked at me one more time "Sam's going to go crazy when he sees you in that."
How did she manage to always know what would make me tick with anger but also anticipation.
I coughed "Do you think this is such a good idea? Remember what happened last time you had a party?"
"Yes, you and Sam had sex" she said pointedly.
I gave her a look and she returned it with a huge goofy grin. "I was talking about you getting grounded for two months."
I felt my stomach drop and my cheeks heat up. That night still felt like yesterday and I remembered every move, every touch like it was ingrained on me. With Tyler fooling around meant fun; with Sam, it meant feelings.
"But this time my parents aren't going to find out" she said. She closed the door to her room and when she stepped out she was in her clothes again. I did the same.
"Maybe you can tell Sam to go out with his friends that night?" I asked quietly not sure if I wanted her to hear me or not.
"Why?" she asked "if he means nothing to you?" she pulled out bills from her wallet and paid the cashier.
"I'm gonna be with Tyler and I don't want another fight to break out" I said quickly coming up with a good reason.
"I'll tell him to keep his distance from Tyler." Sophie promise and I took my bags and slipped them over my shoulder as we continued down the mall.
Arms slipped around Sophie's waist from behind and she let out a small playful shriek. She turned around finding our best friend Marcus behind her.
She slapped his chest "You scared me, you jerk." He chuckled at her and then gave me a hug. "Come on, I'll buy you guys coffee." He slipped his arm over our shoulders and we walked towards Starbucks.
Marcus was one of the sweetest guys I knew. He was like the brother I'd never had and I loved him to death. Like Sophie, I could tell him anything.
"How'd you know where to find us?" Sophie asked as we walked into the café.
"I didn't. I'm meeting some guys to see a movie in a little bit and I figured I'd come a little early to get some coffee."
"Must be fate" I teased. "Sophie has something to tell you."
She tensed and turned to me, "What?" she asked confused.
I raised an eyebrow at her "Your party?" She relaxed.
"Oh." She turned to him "Party at my house on Friday night."
The line was long and we'd been standing there for five minutes before we started to advance just a little bit.
"I'll text the guys to meet me here before the movie" Marcus said. "And I'll spread the word about your party."
We finally ordered our drinks and made our way to a small table. "You guys ready for the road trip?" Marcus asked.
"We've practically been planning this since birth" I said "of course we're ready."
Sophie, Marcus and I had thought up the idea of a road trip a long time ago. Since then we'd planned out almost every detail. We'd gotten the permission we needed from our parents, saved up every penny we got and finally the summer after our senior year came around. We were leaving next week to California. We planned it because it would be our last summer together before we all spilt up for college. I was going to Stanford, Sophie was going to Colorado and Marcus was going to Tampa.
"I can't believe it's finally time" Sophie said taking a sip from her iced coffee. "We've been waiting forever, I felt like it was never going to come."
