Sophie planned a party at our house tonight. I tried to stop it. I liked parties as much as the next guy but I didn't like them when they were at my house and I was stuck cleaning up the mess. As much as I loved Sophie, she was irresponsible and I knew she'd leave me cleaning up the mess that wasn't mine. I was planning to shut it down and tell her no way in hell was I going to be forced to deal with beer being spilled in our swimming pool but then she mentioned Jade. And I couldn't say no. I knew that there was no other way for me to see Jade besides for at this party. She was avoiding me; she hadn't been to her best friend's house since I'd been home which was odd for her because she and Sophie hung out every single day. I'd be able to see her at the party and talk to her and that was enough for me. Hunter came over hours before the party and we went down to my basement to play some pool. I was leaning against the edge of my pool table, watching carefully as Hunter prepared to make his shot. "You gonna shoot?" I asked "Or are you gonna stare at the balls all day?"
He replied by pulling the pull stick back in his arms, then shooting it forward and hitting the ball, sinking it in the hole.
He looked up and smirked at me. "Your turn."
I picked up a pool stick but when I tried to sink the ball, it didn't go in as I had hoped. I was usually so on point.
Hunter noticed it too. "Sam" he said "this girl is messing with you on so many levels. Give her up."
"Jade has nothing to do with my pool shots." I shook my head at him, defensively.
"Listen, I met a girl at college" He said. He looked a little uncomfortable which was a first for him.
"Oh?"
"Yeah, I thought I loved her."
"So where is she?"
"I dumped her before it got too serious, man. I don't want a girl all up in my brain and heart and feelings" he shivered at the word feelings. "You've already done the dumping part. Now all you need to do is move on. Cause trust me, Jade has."
My stomach twisted at the thought that he was right. I'd seen her with Tyler and she looked fine with him. I was out of her system but she was still flowing through mine.
"It is okay, Sam, to be jealous. I mean, Jade's hot-"
"Watch it." I warned, giving him a glare.
"But the point is," he continued "that you need to move on, too. There's gonna be a ton of girls here tonight that would do you." "And why would I want any of them to do me?" I practically vomited in my mouth thinking of having sex with anyone other than Jade. I had done it with other girls before we were together, but now that I knew what it was like to be with her, I couldn't imagine being with anyone else.
"I only sleep with girls I'm in love with, Hunter."
"Then you might want to fall in love with someone new. Jade is done with you."
If he wasn't my best friend, I would've punched him right then and there. But I also knew, deep down, that maybe he was right. And it scared me.
"Falling in love isn't as easy as one, two, three" I said to him. "You don't choose to do it."
"Staying hung up on the same girl isn't going to help. You need to find a girl tonight and have fun with her. Let Jade see you with her. She made you see her with Tyler. Now you get some payback." I hated what Hunter had told me to do and I knew I didn't have to try to hurt Jade by being with another girl in front of her but it seemed like the only thing to do. When she walked into the party, she was wearing the teeniest bikini I'd ever seen. I wanted to rip it off just as much as I wanted to cover her up so no one else looked at her. I tried to go up to her but when she saw me walking her way, she stepped out onto the back deck and ignored me. The only way I would get her attention would be by showing her that she didn't get to me anymore. Of course it wasn't true; she got to me like crazy. And then I saw her; my ex-girlfriend Megan. I knew she would be the perfect girl to drive Jade insane. Jade hated her and the truth was so did I. I dated her before Jade to try to get my mind off of my little sisters best friend but that didn't work so well.
"Hey Meg" I said walking up to her nonchalantly.
"Sam" she said giving me a wide smile. She was the most desperate girl I knew and she'd do anything with me despite the fact that I dumped her for Jade. I made the first move towards a hug and she complied, wrapping her arms around my neck and squeezing me tight.
"I missed you. How's college?" she asked. I steered her towards the couch and didn't let my gaze flicker towards the back deck.
"It's really great. I love New York" I said. She began to tell me stories about her freshman year in college and how she was back for the summer and I pretended to give her my undivided attention. I was really thinking about Jade in that god damn bikini and how Tyler was probably all over her. My fists clenched at my sides and I shoved them behind my back so Megan wouldn't notice. She scooted closer on the couch when I forced a laugh at one of her stories, taking it as a sign to come closer. I hated leading her on when I knew I wouldn't do anything more than kiss her tonight; not with Jade right outside.
Twenty minutes later, she was on my lap and I was kissing her. I hated it so much but Jade had strayed back inside with Tyler on her arm and he had one of his hands on her little ass. I kissed Megan quickly so she would hold me here and I wouldn't get up and punch that sucker. Sophie had warned me about starting a fight with Tyler and I'd promised her my best behavior. Finally, Jade left Tyler by the pool table to play with some of his friends and I waited a few minutes before following her out to the pool. I took Megan with me and sat down a few lounge chairs down from Jade, knowing she would see me. I hated doing this to her but I hated the things she was doing to me more. I had to see if seeing me with someone else affected her. If it did then I would know she was still mine. I would be able to win her back. But if me kissing someone else didn't make her cringe then she was too far gone to ever be mine again.
