Choosing your jewellery is actually one of the trickiest, most complicated parts of deciding what to wear.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
The way I look at it is: jewellery can either compliment your body shape or hide your flaws.
Knowing your body shape is one of the most important steps in picking the right jewellery for you to meet the guidelines that you want in fashion.
Believe it or not, but jewellery can actually play a huge part in how others view your body shape.
So I'll give you a few tricks that I have mastered along the way that has helped me in picking jewellery for myself, (and my clients) to help you on your next jewellery shopping trip. The first tip that I can provide to you is that you should wear whatever you want to.
Yeah, sure, there are loads of guidelines and "rules" out there that will help you to create a desired look, but if you don't like it and wearing it doesn't make you feel happy, don't do it.The best part about fashion is that you can be creative and speak your mind without even having to move your lips. Which means that when you wear what the hell you want....you have confidence.
And when you have confidence, you have the possibility to pull off anything!
So only wear things that make you feel content, or don't wear anything at all, (not literally, because that would be illegal!)If you are more bottom-heavy, adding a necklace to your look can actually do you a lot of favours.
Necklaces will direct the attention more towards the top half of your body, rather than the bottom half: where your problem areas are.
I recommend when adding necklaces to your look to distract the attention, you should use bright patterns so that the attention is brought to the top half and stays there. For women who are trying to make their bust look smaller, should choose pendant necklaces that stop right before the start of your dress or skirt.
If you add necklaces that are big, bulky and rather eye-catching, you will only end up making your bust look that bit larger. So make sure that you choose smaller accessories for the area.Since you want your overall appearance to look slimmer, you should opt for lighter, longer necklaces that reach down to your chest or waist area to make you appear that bit slimmer as the area will become more narrow.
Make sure that you choose necklaces and earrings that will flatter your face shape. I'll give you a quick explanation:
Oval
Necklaces: Lucky you! Since your face is overall in proportion, you can pull off any look that you want. Any necklace shape will work with this face. You should take advantage of the freedom that you have, because there are people out there who would die to be able to style themselves as freely as you do!Earrings: You're still the lucky charm as you can pull off any kind of earring too. So be bold, brave and experiment with what you have.
Round
Necklaces: Since you have a circular face with fuller cheeks, you sadly don't have as much freedom as the oval faces do. But it's still okay as you can experiment with the styles that best suit your range.
The best kind of jewellery for your face shape are ones that create a slimming effect. Your goal should be to visually add length to your face.
Wear longer necklaces that create the illusion of length.Earrings: Opt for square, oblong, elongated, angular or rectangular shapes and long dangles that visually lengthen the shape of the face. Especially avoid round shapes near your face as this will only exaggerate the already round shape.
Heart shaped
Necklaces: A heart shaped face is wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin, (replicating a "heart" shape, see where the name comes from?)
This face shape looks best when paired with jewellery that adds some visual width around the chin and bottom area of the face. Which means that necklaces with strong horizontal lines or chunky beads balance the width of the forehead. Chokers were practically made for the heart shaped face because they manage to soften and reduce the sharpness of the chin and jaw.Earrings: Look from earrings that move the eye from side to side, especially around the area of the chin. Triangular shaped earrings work well, just like earrings with a lot of movement.
Rectangular or square
Necklaces: The rectangular and square faces have clearly defined angles. Search for jewellery that adds curves with this face shape. A necklace with a focal point, (a pendant for example) will draw the focus downwards which adds balance and width to your chin. But if your face is more rectangular than square, (longer and not as wide) make sure to keep most of the focus on your face, because any necklaces that is long in length will only add to the length of your face. A higher choker will reduce the length of your face.Earrings: Curvy earrings will work to soften the angles of your face shape. Opting for longer, more straight earrings will decrease the appearance of the strong square shaped jaw. But be careful with the rectangular face, as longer earrings will only exaggerate the long length that your face portrays.
One of the most important steps to avoid when picking jewellery to make you appear slimmer, is to stay away from: shorter necklaces, chunky and heavy necklaces when accessorising your fashionable outfits as this will only emphasise your weight and body shape. Instead, go for the longer and lighter necklaces that visually add a slimming effect to your appearance.
And above everything, always remember that jewellery should compliment you, not take all the attention away from you.
