The summer wind flows through the dark August night. My car feels as if it is floating down the country roads. The stars scattered across the night sky. The oxygen feels thin going into my lungs. As if there isn't enough in the atmosphere. My breathing becomes almost painful as I roll down my windows and slow as I enter my town. My town is the stereotypical midwest corn and bean town. A population of 4,500, everyone knows each other , news spreads fast. Hell, Mr.Torres told only one person about his affair then a day later it was the only thing Aria Torres heard about in school was how her father slept with a Craigslist prostitute. My cars check engine light flickers and I hear a loud screech from the front of my car. My car's lights turn off and my car is now just powerlessly gliding down my street. Braking and parking it on the side of the road less than a quarter mile from my house. I step out and spin in complete shock. Every house and every car in my line of sight is flashing every light on and off. No real identifiable pattern in the flickering of the lights. I turn back to my car and it's now also flashing its lights. I slowly back up whispering an obscenity under my breath. I roam down my street in awe. I get to the intersection of my road and my driveway , turning to head to my house. I look up as I hear a loud pop above me. At what I thought was just a typical star in the sky was now hurling down what seemed directly to me. I break out in a full sprint to my bike which was leaning against the side of my Mom's 1 bedroom , 1 bath , 800 square foot house. I despise this house, I used to live in such a nice house across the river. In my town there is the nice side, North Lovington . With that there is a not so nice side, South Lovington. They are separated by a large river and only a 2 lane bridge connects what feels like 2 different cultures together. Even the school groups were seemingly segregated , not by race ,but by where you lived. Not every kid in South Lovington was poor and not every kid in North Lovington was rich ,but ever since I could remember the town was essentially 2 towns poorly stitched together. It's hard to properly paint how different the sides were. The north is filled with beautiful houses and apartments. The south is cluttered with small and empty houses. The apartments are run down and half empty. The south geographically is twice the size ,but the same population as the north. The sidewalks in the north are very nice with trees evenly and precisely planted to compliment the houses. In the south you couldn't take 2 steps without breaking your mothers back or your if you were to fall in the countless holes. I'm unsure what led to this separation in class in the town, there were rumors that the mayor's son was shot by a few kids in South Lovington and coming from the North he was okay with letting the south rot. This was nearly three decades ago so I never found out what really happened.
I cycle as aggressively as I can down the street I came from. Occasionally glancing over my shoulder at the apparent space bomb on its way to wipe Lovington off the map. At once could've been mistaken for a star light-years away now is the size of a tennis ball in a hand that's an arm's lengths away. I turn away for too long and I crash into a parked car and flip onto the hood. A shooting pain spikes throughout my body. My brain forgets about the insinuating death and starts to build anger at the brain dead idiot who parked their car in the middle of the roa....
It's my car. Of course it would be me to crash my bike into my own car as a meteor intends to wipe my existence off this earth. I look up from the hood of my car and it's gone. My lungs now can take full deep breaths again , I was so focused on the flaming ball of death I didn't notice that my lungs were still having that clogged feeling. I knew whatever was going on with the lights had a direct correlation, but not whatever was going on with my lungs to the meteor. At this point I see people leaving their houses in confusion at why their house was losing power. I can only assume they noticed other houses were having the same problem and I could see Mr.Rultz stepping off from his small wooden porch giving me an off putting look that I just made a huge ruckus by not just crashing my bike ,but both my bike and my car in front of his house. A glowing red and white light is blinking into the night sky, I feel drawn to it. Like another gravity is pulling me towards this off-brand rainbow. I roll off my car and unlock it. Reach in and pull up on a switch to unlock my trunk. I toss my bike in and throw it shut. Mostly everyone who came out to see what was going on went back inside. I'm not sure how no one else noticed a makeshift Canadian flag light beam in the sky even having a mark in the middle resembling a leaf ,but that's my imagination getting to me. I hesitate ,but twist my car key. Clicks a few times and my car turns on. I take a long look at what looks more like a sideways Polish flag in the sky. I change shift to drive and I think about how soft my bed is. It's not that soft that I would pass on the chance to see a meteorite that appears to be representing some sort of Canadian or Polish pride with its red and white lined beam. I slam on the gas and twist my steering wheel. It must be near midnight by now ,but I'm the most energized I could ever remember being. I'm now back on the main street of south Lovington heading to one of the 50 cornfields that surrounds the two essentially divorced parts of Lovington. I'm driving nearly 90 on this back country road to this glowing candy cane of glory. I'm hoping that my phone didn't crack during my bike trick earlier so I can get a picture. Imagine showing one of the 3 people I talk to that I found the meteorite that hit outside of town before anyone else. I take the final turn and the beam is now very detailed. Very small streaks of blue lines are now visible. Of course the meteor is American with its red, white, and blue , how typical. I park about 150 feet and step out. I can see the crater which was a lot smaller than I really expected it to be. The gravitational pull is stronger than ever. I feel like I am possessed walking towards this crash site , not able to pull away if I even wanted to. This attraction is now more than physical , my inner thoughts are begging me to come closer. I am now at the edge of the crater, it's covered with patches of grass that are scorched and some that are still burning. At the center of the pit is a rock about the size and shape of a car tire. I step into the cavity , noticing the rock in the center appears to be glowing and radiating some sort of visible air waves. I follow light red , closer to pink rock's glow up to the sky. About ten feet up I can see where the colors start to take a more defined split to the Polish flag description from earlier. Without noticing I've approached the rock to be within almost an arm's reach. My attention as before fixates on the rock and the streaking pink glow moving on the object. As if there is a little sea of pink water covering the entire surface of this meteor. There is no apparent damage to this rock, no scratches , dents , or holes. I feel my right foot step closer and my left one follow. The air waves are pressing my pant legs against my skin. My shirt is being pushed up and I can feel my socks slowly sliding down my ankles. Suddenly all that inner pull to this rock is gone, and now I feel no extraterrestrial pull to this shrimp colored magnet. Just me and the rock.
