Chapter 9 - Wendigo
"Oh Come on, Wendigo's are in the Minnesota woods or northern Michigan. I've never heard of one this far west." - Dean Winchester
Episode 2 Wendigo
Roy leads the way as everyone runs to the aid of the shouter. "Help! Somebody!" Someone yells again.
We find no one.
"It seemed like it was coming from around here, didn't it?" Haley asks. We listen. "Everybody back to camp." I say. Back at the campsite all of the supplies are missing. "Our packs!" Haley yells. "So much for my GPS and my satellite phone." Roy says. "What the hell is going on?" Haley asks.
"It's smart. It wants to cut us off so we can't call for help." Sam says. "You mean someone, some nutjob out there just stole all our gear." Roy says. Sam walks over to me and Dean. " I need to speak to you two in private." He says.
We head a little ways away from the group. "Good. Let me see Dad's journal." He says and Dean hands it over. Sam opens it and flips through until he finds a particular page.
"Alright check that out." He says as he points to a first nations-style drawing of a figure. "Oh come on, Wendigo's are in the Minnesota woods or northern Michigan. I've never heard of one this far west." Dean says. "Think about it Dean the claws, the way it can mimic a human voice." I say. "Great." He says. He then takes out his pistol. "Well then this is useless." He sighs.
Sam hands Dean back John's journal and heads past us, stopping for a moment. "We gotta get these people to safety." Sam says. We head back to the campsite. "Alright, listen up, it's time to go. Things have gotten...more complicated." I say. "What?" Haley asks. "Kid, don't worry. Whatever's out there. I think I can handle it." Roy says. "It's not me. I'm worried about. If you shot this thing, you're just going to make it mad. We have to leave. Now." Sam says. "One, you're talking nonsense. Two, you're in no position to give anybody orders." Roy snaps.
"Relax." I say. "We never should have let you come out here in the first place, alright? I'm trying to protect you." Sam says. Roy steps right into Sam's space. "You protect me? I was hunting these woods when your mommy was still kissing you goodnight." Roy snaps. "Yeah? It's a damn near perfect hunter. It's smarter than you, and gonna hunt you down and eat you alive unless we get your stupid ass out of here." Sam says. Roy just laughs.
"You know you're crazy, right?" Roy states. "Yeah? You ever hunt a Wen-" I push Sam. "Roy!" Haley yells. "Chill out." Dean says. "Stop. Stop it. Everybody just stop. Look, Tommy might still be alive. And I'm not leaving here without him." Haley says.
There is a long pause.
"It's getting late. This thing is a good hunter at night. We'll never beat it, not in the dark. We need to settle in and protect ourselves." Dean says. "How?" Haley asks.
~Campsite-Night~
We have built a campfire, and Dean draws something in the dirt around the campsite while Haley pokes at the fire. "One more time, that's" Dean cuts her off. "Anasazi symbols. It's for protection. The Wendigo can't cross over them." Dean says.
Roy laughs, gun over his shoulder. "Nobody likes a skeptic, Roy." Dean says. He heads over to me and Sam. I quickly look away. He sits beside me and Sam which we are at the edge of the campsite.
"You wanna tell me what's going on in that freaky head of yours?" Sam asks. "Dean-" I begin to warn him but he cuts me off. "No, Sam isn't fine." Dean says and turns to him. "You're like a powder keg, man, it's not like you. I'm supposed to be the belligerent one, remember?" He asks. I get up and go and sit down next to Haley. "Dad;s not here. I mean, that much we know for sure, right? He would have left us a message, a sign, right?" Sam says as I overhear their conversation.
"Yeah, you're probably right. Tell you the truth, I don't think Dad's ever been to Lost Creek." Dean says. "Then let's get these people back to town and let's hit the road. Go find Dad. I mean, why are we still even here?" Sam asks. "This is why." Dean says as he goes around to Sam's front and holds up John's journal.
"This book. This is Dad's single valuable possession-everything he knows about, every evil thing is in here. And he's passed it to us. I think he wants us to pick up where he left off. You know, saving people hunting things. The family business." Dean says but Sam just shakes his head no.
"That makes no sense. Why doesn't he just-call us? Why doesn't he-tell us what he wants, tell us where he is?" Sam asks. "I dunno. But the way I see it, Dad's giving us a job to do, and I intend to do it." Dean says. " Dean...no. I gotta find Dad. I gotta find Jessica's killer. It's the only thing I can think about." Sam says.
"Okay, alright, Sam, we'll find them, I promise. Listen to me. You've gotta prepare yourself. I mean, this search could take a while, and all that anger, you can't keep burning over the long haul. It's gonna kill you. You gotta have patience, man." Dean says. Sam looks down, then up at Dean.
"How do you do it? How does Dad do it? Hell how does Skye do it?" Sam asks. I see Dean look over at Haley, Ben, and then me. "Well for one, them." He says as me and him hold eye contact. I can feel my heart beat quicken, the butterflies in my stomach flutter like crazy. Sam looks over where Dean is looking. "I mean, I figure our family's so screwed to hell, maybe we can help some others. Makes things a little bit more bearable." He says. His eyes not leaving mine.
A pause.
"I'll tell you what else helps." He says. It feels like he is staring into my soul. Dean continues still holding eye contact with me. "I do it to protect her...I fight for Skye and kill as many evil sons of bitches as I possibly can before they hurt her." Dean says causing me to blush. "I know she does the same thing for me." He smiles at me and I smile back at him.
Our eye contact breaks as a twig snaps. "Help me! Please!" Someone presumably the Wendigo yells. Me and Sam shine the flashlight about. As Dean stands up reading his gun. "Help!" The Wendigo yells again. "He's trying to draw us out. Just stay cool, stay put." Dean says. "Inside the magic circle?" He asks. "Help! Help me!" The Wendigo screams again.
Then there was growling.
