Chapter 5 - Shoot First Ask Question's Later

"Since when are you all shoot first ask questions later?" - Dean Winchester

"Since now." - Sam Winchester

-Episode 2

Palo Alto California

Birds chirp. Sam, wearing a suit and tie and carrying a bouquet of various flowers excluding roses, walks through an otherwise deserted cemetery. Sam sighs and stops next to a gravestone. It reads 'Jessica Lee Moore, Beloved Daughter, January 24th 1984-November 2nd 2005' There is a small picture of a grinning Jess set into the stone above her name, black and white picture of her leaning against the stone between a white teddy bear and a wooden box with a crucifix leaning on the picture, a small American Flag next to the box, and three candles standing on the gravestone, one is of the virgin de Guadalope. Sam looks between the gravestone and the flowers. "Oh.."Sam begins and laughs. "You always said roses were, were lame, so I brought you, uh," He says and looks at the picture set into the gravestone, then looks away, choking back tears. He steps closer to the gravestone. "Jess...Oh god." Sam's voice cracks as he kneels to set down the flowers. "I should have protected you. I should have told you the truth." Sam leans the flowers in front of the crucifix. An arm covered in dirt shouts out of the ground and grabs Sam by the wrist.

Sam jerks awake. It is 10 Nov 2005, he is riding shotgun next to Dean, Foreigner's 'Hot Blooded' is playing, and the cemetery visit is days behind them if it ever occurred.

Skye's POV

Sam blinks and rubs his eyes. "You okay?" I ask as Dean looks over at Sam concerned. Sam glances over and away. "Yeah I'm okay." He says and Dean nods. Sam isn't okay. He just lost his girlfriend and I know that Sam is blaming himself for not being there and protecting Jess.

"Another nightmare?" Dean asks causing Sam to clear his throat. "You wanna drive for a while?" Dean asks Sam I widen my eyes. "You never let me drive!" I yell. Sam chuckles lightly. "Cause women suck at driving." Dean smirks and I glare at him. "Asshole!" I say. "Dean your whole life you never once asked me that."Sam says. "Just thought you might want to, Nevermind." Dean says. "Look, man, you're worried about me I get it, and thank you, but I'm perfectly okay." Sam says. "Mm-mm."Dean mumbles and Sam grabs the map. "Alright, where are we?" Sam asks.

"We are just outside of grand junction." I say. Sam folds down the map, which is of Colorado and has a large red x labeled 35-111. "You know what. Maybe we shouldn't have left Stanford so soon." Sam says. "Sam, we dug around there for a week. We came up with nothing. If you wanna find the thing that killed Jessica." Dean says. "We gotta find dad first." Sam cuts in. "Dad disappearing and this thing showing up again after twenty years, It's no coincidence. Dad will have answers. He'll know what to do." Dean says.

"It's weird these are the coordinates he left us." Sam says. I look over and look at the map. "This is Blackwater Ridge." I say. "What about it?" Dean asks. "There's nothing there. It's just woods."Sam says and puts the map down. "Why is he sending us to the middle of nowhere?" I ask as we drive past the National Forest Sign that says 'Welcome to Lost Creek Colorado National Forest.'

Dean parks the Impala next to the sign that says. 'Ranger Station Lost Creek, National Forest.' "So Blackwater Ridge is pretty remote." Sam says. We nod and go inside. I look at a 3D map of the national forest, paying particular attention to the ridge labeled 'Blackwater Ridge' I see Dean look at the decorations. "It's cut off by these Canyons here, rough terrain, dense forest, abandoned silver and gold mines all over the place." I say.

"Dude check out the size of this freaking bear." Dean says and I roll my eyes. Sam looks over and I walk over to them. Dean is looking at a framed photo of a man standing behind a much larger bea. "And a dozen more grizzlies in the area, no nature hike, that's for sure." Sam says. "You guys planning on going out near Blackwater Ridge by any chance?" A man says from behind us.

We whip around startled. "Oh no sir, we're environmental study majors from University Boulder, just working on a paper." Sam says. I laugh a little. Dean grins and raises a fist. "Recycle, man." He says. "Bull." The Ranger says and Sam's eyes flicker to Dean, who doesn't move. "You're friends with that Haley girl, right?" He says. I consider on what to say.

"Yes, yes, we are, Ranger." I check the Ranger's name tag. "Wilkinson." I say. "Well I will tell you exactly what we told her. Her brother filled out a backcountry permit saying he wouldn't be back from Blackwater until the twenty-fourth, so it's not exactly a missing persons now is it?" He asks. Dean shakes his head. "You tell that girl to quit worrying. I'm sure her brother's just fine." He says.

"We will. Well that Haley girl's quite a pistol, huh?" Dean says. "That's putting it mildly." Tanger says. "Actually you know what would help if I could show her a copy of that back country permit. You know, so she could see her brother's return date." Dean says as the Ranger eyes him so Dean raises his eyebrows.

~Later~

We leave the ranger station. Dean is holding a piece of paper and laughs. "What are you cruising for a hookup or something?" I ask. "What do you mean?"He asks. "The coordinates point to Blackwater Ridge, so what are we waiting for? Let's go find Dad. I mean why even talk to this girl?" Sam asks. Here we go again. I get in the Impala and Sam and Dean stop on opposite sides.

"I don't know, maybe we should know what we're walking into before we actually walk into it? I would hate myself for putting Skye in danger by not knowing what we are up against." Dean says. "What?" He asks. "Since when are you all shoot first ask questions later, anyways?" Dean asks. "Since now." Sam snaps. "Really?" Dean asks. I sigh as they both get in slamming the car doors shut. This is gonna be one awkward car ride.

~Collin's House~

We go up to the door and Dean knocks. The door opens revealing Haley Collins. "You must be Haley Collins. I'm Dean, this is Skye and Sam, we're, ah, we're rangers with the Service Ranger Wilkinson sent us over. He wanted us to ask you a few questions about your brother Tommy." Dean says causing Haley to hesitate.

"Lemme see some I.D." She says. Dean pulls out a fake I.D with the name 'Samuel Cole' and hands it, then she looks at Sam, who smiles. Haley opens the door. "Come on in." She says. "Thanks." He says. The door swings open. Haley catches sight of the Impala. "That yours?" She asks. "Yeah." He says. I follow her gaze to the Impala. "Nice car."
