I walked to my next class as Dalton and Selene talked to each other. I hadn't seen Thanos all day but I would be the last person on the earth to admit that I was worried about him. I sighed as I took a seat in the back where Thanos would normally be sitting next to me. This day was turning out how I hoped. As I walked through every class, kids were still scared of me.
I didn't think I was that scary. I even tried to smile at some of them but that just made everything worse. Class started and I could barely pay attention. I was sick to my stomach with worry and discomfort. The door opened and a few people gasped. When I looked up, Thanos was in the doorway looking pale and weak. I had to blink a few times to make sure the sick kid was Thanos.
"Take a seat. Principal Conarvic already told me what happened," the teacher said and watched as Thanos slowly but surely made his way toward his seat. I gave all the kids who were staring at Thanos a warning glance and they looked away. When Thanos took his seat, he was breathing hard. "What happened to you," I whispered and Thanos just shook his head.
"Too weak. Forgive me," he said and actually opened his book. I noticed dark, almost purple circles under Thanos's eyes and his lips were raw and peeling. I grew more depressed every second I stared at him. I even felt a few tears forming in my eyes. I had to look away until the bell rang. I gave Selene a light nod and she pulled Dalton away in understanding. The class cleared out before I made an attempt to look Thanos in the eye.
"I-I'm going to help you," I said before standing up. "I don't need it," he whispered. I grabbed his school bag and evened the two bag's weight on my back. I walked toward him and put his arm around my shoulder. "You don't have to...help me," he said and winced in pain as he stood up.
"Just shut up Thanos and let me help. You can argue with me when you're better," I said and Thanos was silent all the way to my room. When I laid Thanos on my bed I was struggling for breath. "What...happened to you," I asked. "T-they wanted to do more tests on our kind after you caused a scene. I volunteered," he said and I was a little taken aback.
"You would do that for me," I asked. Thanos winced in pain and I came back with an Advil. I managed to get some day time medicine from Selene. When Thanos swallowed the two pills he said, "I had to. They have already...tested me inside and out. They might have...found something different in you." I sat next to Thanos and held his hand.
"What did they do to you," I asked. "Shots, tubes, levels of pain, any and everything you don't want to imagine," he said and started to close his eyes. "You're not going to pass out on me, are you," I asked. "I hope not. That wouldn't look good for me, would that," he asked with a grin. I sighed and got a cold towel for Thanos. I put it over his eyes and he sighed. "Thank you, Amira," Thanos said.
"No problem. You've helped me so much before. This is only expected," I said. "Do you think...this is how we'll have to live forever? What if...we keep getting captured and sent here. Will we ever escape this pain," Thanos asked. I looked out the window and a bird was flying around. "Who can really say, Thanos? I think that for now we should just worry about you getting better," I said. "Sing to me. Please," Thanos said.
I looked at him confused and Thanos asked me to sing again. "W-what do you want me to sing," I asked. "I just...don't want to feel alone. Anything," he said and I continued to sing a simple melody filled with la's, dee's, and dum's. I didn't know I could sing so I was hesitant at first. Thanos encouraged me and I sang softer with more confidence. "It's beautiful," he said when I finished.
"Thank you. I didn't know I could sing," I said. "You don't know a lot about yourself. I actually...," Thanos trailed off. "You actually what," I asked and Thanos squeezed my hand. "It's in the past. Never mind. Can you get me something to eat? I'm really weak," Thanos said and I nodded.
