"I think I'm going to go back to my room and rest," Ron stated later that day as the bell for lunch rang. I nodded at him understandingly. He's barely left his bed for almost three days straight, so getting back into things so quickly couldn't have been easy.
"Want me to walk you back?" I offered, standing up next to him.
"I'm good," he replied, turning me down. He gave me a weak smile before crutching the opposite way down the hallway.
My heart sank a little as he got further and further away. Ever since we've been together, it felt like I've barely seen him. Obviously, there's been many obstacles, including his injury, but I couldn't help but wish he'd at least let me walk with him.
"You okay?" Hermione asked, popping up next to me as Ron fully disappeared from my sight.
"Yeah, I'm okay," I replied, taking in a sharp breath before turning to face the direction of The Great Hall. "Let's go have lunch."
We arrived at lunch a few minutes after everyone else, strolling over to our usual table and sitting down with our friends.
"Where's Ron?" Cedric asked as we reached to grab food, looking to me for an answer. Everyone else's heads turned toward me as well, awaiting my response.
"He was tired," I explained quickly, not particularly wanting to relive the moment.
"Tired from what? Laying in bed all day?" came a smug voice from behind me. Laughter followed the insult and I already knew who was speaking without turning around.
"Draco," I stated coldly. "Drop it."
"Is a Hufflepuff supposed to intimidate me?" he asked mockingly, earning a couple more laughs from his friends.
I spun myself fully around now. I was already upset, and Draco's comments just seemed to be icing on the cake. "Can we talk outside?" I asked impulsively, but it wasn't really a question. Before he could open his mouth to make another snarky remark, I grabbed his arm and yanked him from the bench he sat at.
My friends at the table watched us with concerned eyes as we made our way over to the doors. Cedric looked especially worried. I gave him a "I've-got-this-under-control" look before continuing to march Draco out.
"Ow, ow, ow," he whimpered as he trailed behind me.
The door shut loudly behind us, leaving the two of us alone in the hallway. A few stray kids passed and gave concerned stares, but thanks to Draco's reputation, most of them steered clear of us.
"What do you want?" he spat, pulling his arm away from my grasp and rubbing it.
"I know what you're doing," I shot. "I know what you're up to." I wasn't planning on holding Draco accountable today, but I guess that's what I'm doing.
He angled his head up and pursed his lips. "What am I up to?"
"You know what I'm talking about!" I demanded furiously. "Cedric heard you talking to your friends in the bathroom and told me all about your little scheme," I said, waving my finger in his face.
His expression went from confident to guilty almost immediately after the words left my mouth. He knew he was caught in the act.
"I know what you're doing, and I'm telling you, it stops now," I began. "You have to stop-"
My accusations were interrupted as Draco reached out, grabbed my face, and kissed me.
It took me a moment to process what was going on. It all happened so fast, my mind was racing to catch up with my body. Impulsiveness took over me as I began to kiss him back.
