Chapter 6

It had been a couple of minutes sitting outside looking at the sky before Kuroo came out

"What are you doing out here?" he asked 

"Couldn't sleep, what about you?" 

"Couldn't sleep either" he said sitting beside me "When did you start to get involved with the volleyball club?" he asked 

"Just recently after they caught me trying to watch them during one of their practices one day. I guess me showing up here through all of you a curveball didn't it?" I asked 

"You could say that. From the very few encounters I've had with you, you don't seem the type to like a volleyball" he told me 

"Well I never really had a good experience with volleyball" I mentioned laying my chin on my knees

"Really?" I nodded 

"In middle school, I joined a team because my parents thought it would help me. Although I was decent at the sport it didn't help that I wasn't confident while playing. Thinking about it makes me cringe" I confessed

"I wouldn't have imagined you played volleyball before," he said 

"I don't exactly like physical activities. Similar to Kenma, I guess, I would rather play video games" 

"I would like to see you play sometime" he commented 

"Sure I don't mind" we didn't talk much after that. We both fell into a comforting silence. Eventually, I started to get sleepy. Without thinking I leaned my head against Kuroo and let my eyes close. 

When I woke up the next morning I noticed I was back inside 'I guess Kuroo brought me inside when I fell asleep' I thought not being able to recall coming inside. When I got into the gym everyone was already practicing and warming up for the day. When they started playing I sat down with Yachi and the other managers on the sides watching them. While we were talking someone called out 

"Watch out!" looking up we saw a volleyball coming straight toward us. The girls ducked while I instinctively caught the ball catching the attention of everyone.

"Here you go," I said tossing the ball back while they stared wide-eyed at me as did everyone else. From the corner of my eye, I caught Kuroo smirking

'What did I do now?'  I thought before someone cough which snapped everyone's trance on me out and back toward the match. The managers went back to talking but I had this weird feeling the whole time after like I was being watched. During a short break, the boys had that I realized what it was. 

"Hey Mika come over here real quick," Kuroo asked walking over everyone's eyes were zoned in on me 

'They're still surprised by that catch, aren't they? Wait don't tell me--' 

"You're going to play on Karasuno's team. They're going to sub-Hinata for this" Kuroo said 

"Wait what-- no I can't -- I'm not even that good. Hell, I haven't--" 

"Don't freak out Mika! I'm sure you'll do great!" Hinata encouraged walking to the sidelines. We all lined up on our respective sides before the game started right away, I could tell that no one was holding back. That was until I saw one of the middle blockers on Nekoma purposely hit the ball over to me. Calm but nervous I received the ball underhand hitting it to the far side of the court. I hit it pretty hard too so it was high in the air, that's when Asashi struck it down scoring a point for us. Everyone yelled in victory

"Nice job Mika" Dachi and a few others complimented

"Oh um thanks but that wasn't much" I defended

"The fact you hit it over to where Asashi could hit it perfectly was really good," Tanaka said I gave a little smile before turning back toward the court. With the next serve I had this feeling that I knew what was going to happen. As the ball came over to our side and Tanaka was going to hit it but three blockers came up. Tanaka hit the ball but it hit the blocker's hands and started falling down. I slide over just as the ball fell off the blocker's hands. I setted it upwards from the floor just for Kagayama to do a setter's dump which won us a point.

"Yes!!" everyone yelled out before I was aggressively picked up and praised for that

"Damn Mika didn't know you were slick like that!" Nishinoya said I just laughed nervously 

"Just had a feeling, I guess," I said as the next match started I watched the ball closely as it went from person to person until it got on our side 

"Mika!" Kagayami yelled setting it to me

'Ah!' I thought as the ball came toward me. I did the only thing that I could think of. 

"Sorry coach" I called out as I ran toward coach Ukai who was beside the net "Help me!" as I wanted he put his hands together as I put my foot on them and pushed off and next to where I hit the ball behind the two blockers scoring us a point. As the ball hit the ground with everyone standing. None went for it they all stared at where the ball landed.

"THAT. WAS. AWESOME!!!" Hinata yelled jumping up in the air. That was when everyone in the gym who saw that came up and hugged me 

"Where have you've been hiding these amazing skills?!" Coach Ukai asked

"We may have a new Hinata" Dachi joked

"Hey!" Hinata yelled making us all laugh. 

"Dam when you mentioned you played volleyball, I didn't expect you to be like this" Kuroo said 

"I did say I only played one year in middle school so"

'I don't think telling them that watching them played helped me be like this' throughout the rest of the game it seemed like I started to fit right in as another player on the team. After we finished this match we played two more before calling it a day.
