Derek had been right, Ophelia was paged a short while later, which gave her a reason to run away from Izzie's prying questions about Derek, questions that were making her very uncomfortable.
She met both Bailey and Derek in the Attending's lounge, Bailey was holding the file and they seemed to already be talking about it, out of habit she trapped her bottom lip between her teeth and made her way to them, nibbling her bottom lip in anxiety, hoping that for some reason Mr. Gaunt wouldn't need immediate surgery,
"What have I told you about bitting your lip?" Bailey questioned as soon as she got close enough, startling Ophelia immensely since she thought that Bailey was paying attention to what Derek was saying, especially since the man himself had been completely oblivious at her arrival. "Sorry." Ophelia mumbled, releasing her lip and looking down at the ground sheepishly.
Derek smiled warmly at Lia before turning back to the chart and saying "The seizure means that Mr. Gaunt's condition has worsened, which means that his surgery will have to be anticipated." there it was the news that Ophelia was hoping not to hear.
"The aftermath of the seizure could've been much worse were it not for your quick actions." Derek continued, turning his blue eyes to Ophelia, smiling proudly at her while Bailey hummed, "To when should we anticipate the surgery?" Bailey questioned, turning her brown eyes to the Neurosurgeon and the intern, waiting for a reply.
"The sooner the better I'd say, check the surgery board and see when there's an opening, and if there is no opening today see which one can be bumped out of the way." Ophelia replied, before wincing slightly and correcting herself "Moved to another day." her green eyes peered up slightly at the doctors before her, scared that they might berate her for her choice of words but thankfully neither did, they merely looked amused.
"Sounds like a good plan." Derek agreed, looking at Bailey to see if she approved or not, her lips pressed into a thin line as she thought about it. Did she want another intern in the O.R. while the first chosen one hadn't even finished messing up his procedure? Granted Ophelia was not George O'Malley, she was more medically efficient from what she'd seen with her own eyes but she wasn't sure if she wanted to take that risk.
When they spoke earlier, when she witnessed Ophelia slip into a seasoned Doctor mode in order to save Mr. Gaunt she all but gave Ophelia the silent approval for her to set foot inside the O.R. but now after Burke had chosen O'Malley to be his guy she wasn't so sure. This wasn't just her thinking, this was also derived from the fact that Ophelia looked tense at the mere mention of the surgery being moved up in the timeline, the way her face had anxiety and worry written all over it, the way her eyes shined with uncertainty.
And that was what pushed her to make her final decision.
"I know that like your colleagues, you will be watching O'Malley's surgery." she began closing the chart, "I want you to check the O.R. board before you head for the gallery, book Mr. Gaunt's surgery on the first spot you find open, I don't care if it's at 2 in the morning or 5 in the afternoon understood?" Ophelia nodded at Bailey and grabbed the file chart that was being extended to her.
"And remember I want you fed and ready to save a life." Bailey finished, her voice final and demanding causing the young Montgomery to back away from the attending and the surgeon and out of the attending lounge, only releasing a breath that she'd been holding when she was halfway down the stairs.
