"What are you two doing?"
Carlos and Jay whirled around, obviously trying to hide something. Jay had a decent poker face, but Carlos's was pants, and right now it was a neon sign flashing GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY.
"Uh, nothing," Jay said, clearly lying.
"You're lying," Lonnie said.
The day up until that point had actually been going very well, and I'd walked into the boys' room with Lonnie in tow to brag about it, only to interrupt them in the middle of something potentially illegal.
"We 3-D printed the Fairy Godmother's wand," Carlos said.
"Dude!" Jay whined.
"She scares me!" he hissed back. "They both do!" Carlos looked over at us. "Mal went back to the Isle, we went to go get her, Ben got captured, and now we have to give Uma the wand of the Fairy Godmother to get her to let him go."
It took me a moment to remember who Uma was. "Shrimpy?" I asked hesitantly.
"Yeah, her."
"Well, I'm going with you," Lonnie decided.
Jay scoffed. "Uh, no, you're not."
"Yes, I am. I'm good at fighting and I can help you out. Besides, if you don't let me come, I'll tell every adult in this school what you're doing right now."
"Just let her go, man," I said tiredly. "It's not worth arguing with her about it. She's right, she could help you out."
"Thank you, Maddie," Lonnie said.
"Wait, where are the others?" I asked.
"Evie and Mal are still on the Isle. They're...working through some things."
"Well, good for them. You all better make it back before school starts, though," I warned. "Otherwise you'll wish you had just stayed on the Isle with the amount of trouble you'll get in."
"Promise," Carlos said, and we pinky-swore on it.
"Alright, you three, have fun and don't die. I'm going to go to bed." I kissed Lonnie on the cheek. "Stab a pirate for me, would you, lover doll? I'll see you later."
It had been a very long day, and I deserved eight hours of sleep. Sue me.
Lonnie woke me up the next day by straight-up barging into my room. "Maddie, wake up, you're going to be late!"
"Mmm, no, let me sleep," I whined into my pillow."
"You sleep like the dead. You're fine."
"The dead request ten more minutes."
In response to that, she pulled off all the covers, then shrieked in surprise.
"Girl, it's summer, why would I wear pajamas?" I groaned, covering my ears. It wasn't fair that I felt so terrible after actually getting enough sleep. I sat up and swung my legs over the side of the bed. "God, you're so much worse than just evil- you suck."
"Get dressed, come on!" Lonnie insisted, rifling through my doors and very pointedly not looking at me.
"Why are you so cheerful? What could you possibly be so happy about this early in the morning?"
"I think Jay might let me on the fencing team," she explained hurriedly. "I showed him what I was made of yesterday, and no, I didn't get to stab a pirate for you, but I did shove one off a boat."
"That's also acceptable. Thank you very much."
"You're welcome. Come on, get dressed." She threw my uniform at me and politely stepped out into the hallway while I changed.
