WARNINGS: Hanahaki Disease AU + blood, vomit, mentions of death, overly dramatic (in my own opinion), a pick your own ending story.

Hanahaki disease is a fictional sickness wherein one who knows/thinks is in a one-sided or unrequited love coughs up/vomits flower petals. As the feelings grow, the flower inside one's lungs also grows until one dies from difficulty in breathing. This can be cured if the loved one reciprocates genuine, romantic love or if the victim decides to undergo surgery and have the flower removed. Doing the latter means forgetting the feelings towards the loved one, or possibly the romantic feeling for anyone ever.

You wish you didn't meet him.

It was obvious you didn't hate him, because if you did, you wouldn't be hacking out yellow flower petals repeatedly onto the toilet bowl in the cubicle you locked yourself in, tears pooling your eyes each time you open your mouth. If you didn't, you wouldn't be feeling a burning ache from your stomach, to your dry throat, and mouth, as whatever contents your stomach had once scratching every bit of skin that it passed, coming out decorated with petals as if you'd digested a scrapbook, leaving a trace of disgusting floral taste with a mix of acid.

If you hadn't mixed up his notebook with yours, maybe you wouldn't have been in this situation. Maybe you would've been living an easy life in your last year in high school. If the mere exchange of rightful belongings didn't escalate to studying together during lunch break until the two of you were close enough to be called friends, maybe you wouldn't be suffering.

It felt like you've been going through this for eternity, when in reality it only started a week ago in the comforts of your rooms when you were having a difficult time to falling asleep, so to pass time, you read about volleyball despite never taking an interest to the sport or any of the sorts before. You'd only heard of it from him, so there wasn't any harm in learning about it now, you thought there wasn't any harm in finding out what setters were and their exact role─the moment you stopped to think why were you doing this, that's when it began. You thought the itch on your throat was merely an itch, solved by forcing a cough, but when you did, it only brought more worries.

Who knew this disease was real? Certainly not you. You only read about it in some stories, you didn't think it would actually happen to you.

You coughed violently after emptying your stomach, shooting out one, and two, and more of the petals and another never ending shower of it, letting out a small cry at the pain it brought upon.

If you got this worse with just by him pressing a hand to your forehead to check your temperature in the middle of your usual lunch break studying because you looked red, then what more? What more if he held your hand instead? What more if he leaned in to

"[YF/N], are you okay?" your coughing stopped upon hearing a familiar voice, it was Michimiya, a friend of yours, your breathing stopped─you hadn't realized that there was someone out there, you didn't know how long she has been there, knocking on the door.

"I'm okay, Yui, I ate something bad, that's all," what a pathetic excuse, you thought, you didn't even eat anything since you felt sick and went straight to preparing your things before Sugawara came, and she knew that. You flushed the contents of the bowl before forcing yourself to stand no matter how weak your legs felt, leaning on the door to support your frame, "i-is Sugawara still in the classroom?"
