The woods were obscure and eerie, the thick layer of leaves above preventing the rays of the moon from passing through. In there, sheltered from the wind, the fog was dense and opaque, covering the ground and twirling around their legs. It was pitch black and impossible to see two feet ahead, and Khepri heard Jungkook let out a surprised yelp when he ran directly through some spiderwebs, catching some with his face.
She realized that they weren't going to get very far in such blackness and stopped running, tapping the back of her neck with two fingers.
Ego manere in tenebris, she thought, closing her eyes.
The pentacle that was tattooed on the nape of her neck became warm, and she blinked, her eyes suddenly seeing the forest in a ghostly light, like the silver rays of the moon were now able to pierce through and show her every detail of the forest like it was the middle of the day.
"What are you doing?" asked an irritated Jungkook, who had grabbed his cellphone to serve as a flashlight.
Khepri snatched it from his hand, turning off the screen.
"Give me your hand."
"I swear, if you don't give me back my phone right this second, I'm leaving you here and..."
The girl snatched his palm in hers, tightly holding it.
Et participes vires meum vobiscum.
Jungkook blinked fast, suddenly blinded by light. He, too, could see the forest through a new silver brightness.
"What is that?" he exclaimed.
The dog barks just behind them, followed by shouting and gunshots put a stop to his amazement. They both started running as fast as they could, jumping above knotty roots and sharp rocks, sprinting through thick bushes.
The gunshots were incessant, sounding like a series of fireworks behind them.
"Keep your head down!" yelled Khepri, feeling a bullet lodging itself in her shoulder, and another one right in her lower back.
She almost let go of his hand, wincing as she ran through the pain. The girl was protecting Jungkook with her body, but he still had his head fully exposed. He changed direction, turning left to try to lose their chasers, then right again, running as fast as he could.
Khepri was heaving, getting out of breath and tired as they got deeper and deeper into the forest. Following Jungkook despite her injuries was demanding her a tremendous effort and the boy had apparently no plan to slow down, slicing through the woods like a wild animal running for his life. She didn't even understand how he could run this fast with both the sword and her bag weighing him down.
Alas, running this quickly had the advantage of losing their adversaries. The hunters couldn't see in the dark, which meant their progress was a lot slower. Khepri started dragging Jungkook back as soon as she realized they had lost them, pulling him backward until his hand slipped from hers, plunging him into darkness.
"I need a minute," she let out with a groan, feeling the hot blood seep from her wounds and soak her cami and cape.
The bullets were moving into her flesh, slowly making their way out of her body. She let out a whimper and twisted her arm in her back, directly grabbing the little butts of metal from her injuries and ripping them from her flesh.
"Are you alright?" Jungkook whispered, alarmed by her expression of agony.
"Never better," she answered with gritted teeth.
She let the two bullets fall onto the ground, metal shining slightly in the darkness. With a deep breath she stood up tall, ready to get going.
"What should we do now?" Jungkook asked.
