Chapter 1
***
Cadence's P.O.V.
It was quiet. Awkwardly quiet.
"We need to talk." Tyler confirmed. He did not seem happy.
Oh but how I was the opposite. Yes! I was free!
For tonight, at least. Once I go back, not so much.
My hands were bloodied and bruised. My head hurt like no other and all the bruises that were starting to heal are now freshly new.
Thank god for Axel.
"I say we take her to the doctor." Cameron suggested.
I quietly sit in the back, staring at my hands, trying to stop the bleeding from them.
"What? Are you kidding me? We can't take her to the hospital!" Tyler exclaims. "They'll think we did it!"
"Tyler stop being a pussy. It's not like your dad can't get us out of jail anyway." Axel snaps.
Tyler grunts. "Whatever man."
Axel starts the car. We get to the hospital about 30 minutes quicker than it should have took. Axel drives insanely fast.
The three boys get out and wait for me.
I slowly climb out, wincing when I accidentally touch something or move to much.
"What are we gonna tell them?" Tyler whispers as we walk to the door.
"Dirt bike accident. On a tar road."
Everyone nods.
Cameron holds the door open for all of us and we walk to the reception desk.
"Oh my god!" The lady sitting at the desk says the second she lays eyes on me.
I haven't even seen my own face, so I have no idea what she just saw. Obviously it's pretty bad considering the way her face changed.
"Uh, I'll get you a doctor." She says picking up the phone and hurriedly poking it with her manicured nails.
"Dr. Frank, we have a patient here who is pretty badly beat up. Could you come down?" She mumbles a few more things before setting the phone back down and putting on a fake smile. "He will be here soon."
She's right.
In about a minute a doctor is right up in my face asking all sorts of questions that I have no idea how to answer. Pretty soon he takes me to a room and checks me out there, bandaging my wounds and taking x-rays and tests.
"Okay, Cadence." Dr. Frank says, sitting down next to my bed and smiling at me. "You were pretty beat up in that accident. Luckily, you won't need surgery on any part of your body."
I sigh in relief. I don't know how I am going to pay Axel back for the money he just spent on me.
"Do you want to good news or the bad news first?"
"Good."
"Okay, well, you don't have any broken bones besides the ones in your hands, we won't be able to do anything about those though. But unfortunately, you have a minor concussion. Your hands seem to be fine, but they're going to hurt for a while." He says. "Now the bad."
I silently hold my breath.
"We know that you weren't in a dirt bike accident, Cadence. We can tell that your parents have been abusing you since you were a child." Dr. Frank pauses and looks at the boys who seem extremely relieved that he knows it wasn't them. "But what I would like to know is how these boys got involved."
"We were visiting a house near Cadence's and heard the yelling and screaming." Axel says smoothly.
The doctor nods and looks back at me. "Do you have any other relatives that you could move in with?"
I take a moment to think before my eyes light up. "Yeah, my aunt."
Dr. Frank smiles. "Okay, we will call her and get everything set up. But for now I just need you to rest, okay?" He looks at the boys. "You can talk to her, but I want you out of here by six o-clock. She needs rest."
The boys nod and soon he is gone.
"So where does your aunt live?" Cameron asks.
"Medford, Oregon."
He nods. "Not that far away, I guess."
"Three hours, dude." Tyler juts in.
"Still. It really isn't that far."
I laugh at the silliness of the two. Soon enough, after some small talk with the boys, I start to feel woozy. Blame it on the medicine.
The boys say their final goodbye.
And that's the last time I will see them in a very long time.

My aunt, Jane, grabs me tight and pulls me in for a heart-warming hug.
The last time I saw Jane was when I was nine. We were always really close.
She pulls away to examine my face. "Oh honey!" She exclaims. "I haven't seen you in forever!'
I smile as she pulls me in for another hug.
Once Jane finishes her love festival she finally starts to show me around.
Some weird limo guy drove me all the way down here. I guess he was some sort of child service dude. Technically, it is totally legal for me to leave my parents, but I guess since Jane is my legal guardian now, she had to sign something.
Jane grabs my hand gently, noticing the gauze and bandages around it.
"Okay." She says flinging a door open. "This is your room."
The walls are a cyan blue with white trim on the ceiling and the floor. There is a queen sized bed sitting in the middle of the room, the black and white comforter matches perfectly with the color on the walls. A small desk is sitting in the corner and a closet next to it.
"I hope you like it. I didn't really have much of a warning, but I did buy you some clothes and stuff."
This time it's me that is pulling Jane in for a hug. "Thank you." I whisper into her ear, squeezing her tight with tears in my eyes.
"Hey. It's okay. They're gone, and I promise to never let them near you again. Okay?" She asks when she sees the tears in my eyes.
I nod.
"I'll let you get settled in."
I give her a little wave before closing the door and throwing my bags on the ground.
I look over the room once more before starting to unpack.
Putting all my clothes in the closet, I set up an empty picture frame on my desk.
I throw my notebook in the drawers and a couple pencils.
After I finish unpacking, I plop down on my bed.
"Cadence! Can you come down here?!" Jane calls.
I reluctantly get up and make my way down the stairs.
"I forgot to tell you! This is Kyle, the boy across the street. He is your new neighbor, and is in your same grade. Hopefully you will go to college together."
I smile at the handsome boy. His blonde locks are falling all over his very nice face, and his brown eyes seem to read my soul.
He sticks his hand out. "Kyle. But you already know that."
I smile at him while connecting my hand with his. "Cadence. Nice to meet you. Hopefully we will become friends."
