Chapter 36

Cadence's P.O.V

I wake up from a shake on the shoulder, which makes my head slip out of my hand, causing me to smack my head of the arm rest of the chair.

"Ow!" I call out ready to pounce on the person to cause me pain. Not to mention that I have a bruise from yesterday.

I turn my head to see Jane. She gives me a concerned face but her eyes show me she is trying not to laugh. I smile when I see her and immediately stand up to hug her.

She let's out a surprised yelp but hugs me back nevertheless. I pull away and see Ethan and Danielle with her. So with excitement I hug them too. Both act like Jane did. I'm not a huggy person.

When hugs are exchanged we sit down again and wait. Sleeping took the edge off the intense scenario that Axel has rabies. My heart starts to beat faster with every minute.

At least if he dies you got to tell him you love him.

I mentally face palm. He isn't going to die! Right?

The door opens, snapping me out of my fears. Penny comes rushing through the door. She looks around for a while before spotting us. "Oh my god!" She says in a hushed voice once she gets close to me. "What the hell happened?"

Jane hears Penny and crosses her arms in a disapproving manner. "Yeah, Cadence. Why don't you explain to us what happened and why I'm not sleeping in my bed right now."

My eyes widen when I see everybody waiting for an explanation. "I- well..." I trip over my words. What am I supposed to tell them. Just to let you know Axel convinced me to sneak out and then he unexpectedly told me he loved me which caused panic. So I ran in a fucking park then got attacked by a swingset pole. And then Axel tried to protect me from a squirrel which ended when he got bit and now we are here.

I took a deep breath. No way in hell was I telling them all that.

"Jane. I love you, I really do," I say when I see a head of black hair enter the building. "But this isn't the time. Or place. I need to take care of something, I'll be back!" I say kissing her cheek and squeezing through the crowd of people to make my way towards the black haired slut.

She looks around, and when I get closer she watches me like a hawk. I stand in front of her and watch her take in my apperance, which makes me feel extremely self-conscious.

"What are you doing here?" I finally ask.

Lacey flings her purse up around her shoulder. "Katie is it? Well my brother is sick or something. I'm guessing that you are here for the same reason. Following him around like a stray dog." She says, while taking a sip of her coffee. "He doesn't care about you Katie."

I'm to astonished by her words to even think about correcting my name. She smirks at me, then pushes past me, making her way to the receptionist.

I stand still, watching her, before coming up with a comment to throw back at her. "He doesn't care about you Lacey. Right now in his eyes, you are the one who is following him around like a stray dog." I call.

I'm sure plenty people heard, counting my family, but I don't have to energy to care. Getting in fights like these are exhausting, not to mention the running and panicking I've done for the last few hours.

She stops in her tracks, turns around slowly, and stomps her way back to me. "Is that what he told you? Did he tell you that we're over? Katie, you have it all mixed up."

My mouth drops. "Then why was he with me when this happened, huh? He didn't seem to care about you when he ran out that door looking for me, when you guys..."

"That's exactly what I'm talking about. He let that happen, Katie. And if you hadn't come, we would have gone all the way. He's always going to come running back to me." She spits at me. To be honest, the 'all the way' thing makes me feel a bit better, because I wasn't sure if they did go all the way. But of course the rest stung, pretty bad.

"He loves me Lacey. I don't fucking care what you say, because you just have this fantasy world in your-"

I'm cut off by Lacey throwing her head back in laughter. She leans forward and laughs some more, before straightening up and leaning in close. "Is that what he told you, Katie?"

I scrunch my face up at the smell of her coffee breath and take a step back.

"Did he tell you that he loves you? Trust me, honey, he says that a lot. Guys will go through the stupidest shit just to get some meaningless sex. If you think Axel is going to be your boyfriend, you better jump off a bridge now before he breaks your little heart." Lacey says, smirking at me one more time, before swaying her damn hips all the way back to the door. She stops and looks at me. "I'll come back later. Either way, he'll still want me." She says, before spinning on her heel, and pushing the doors open, disappearing into the night.

I want to curl into a ball and die. Her words made me feel so stupid. Of course Axel doesn't love me. How could he? I'm just another naive girl, and he is just another horn dog boy who wants some sex. Simple as that.

Penny comes rushing over, blabbing things in my ear, that I have no intention of listening to. I stare into the crowd, watching as parents, children, grandparents, and babies all whoosh by, As if everything is going in fast motion. And then I see him.

I see Axel and his bright smile as he hops of a wheelchair and thank the lady who was pushing him. He turns to me with bright full eyes, and a genuinely happy smile.

And I run. Again.
