You and your best friend Charlie were hanging out after school. It was Friday night and this was the usual.

Recently, your feelings for Charlie had changed. He didn't seem like just your best friend. As you both had been growing up lately, it seemed different between the both of you. Not a bad different, just... not the same.

The feelings you had when you hung out with him had intensified over the past few months. It felt different whenever it was just you two, it felt different when you would do homework together, it felt different when you watched TV on the couch together.

"Together" felt different. The decision you faced was whether or not you wanted to address it. What if he didn't feel the same way? What if he didn't notice any changes and you were just being dramatic or imagining things?

You thought maybe you would do it today. You kept seeing a possible opportunity arise, but you just couldn't force yourself to take advantage of it.

Finally, it just felt like the time was right while you were both out in the backyard, swinging in a hammock after dark. You were getting into a deep discussion about people and relationships when he asked you if you had your eye on anyone.

"Me? My eye on someone?" You asked, kind of caught off guard.

"Um... yeah. Why are you acting so weird?" He asked, sitting up in the hammock and looking at you. You shrugged.

"No reason," you lied. He lifted an eyebrow and then laid down again. It was quiet for a few minutes.

"Who?" He asked in a teasing tone.

"No one," you replied.

"You just said that you did have a crush on someone, you can tell me. I won't tell anyone else," he said.

"No, it's ok. I just don't feel like it. I don't even know if he likes me back and it's kind of embarrassing because... I don't know. It just is."

"Well... have you gotten signs that he likes you back?" Charlie asked. You shrugged and nodded.

"Yeah."

"What makes you think he doesn't like you back? You're great."

"It's just... it's so complicated. It's more complicated than that because what if it's just me?"

"Have you asked him?" You snorted.

"Asked him? Are you out of your mind?"

"No, I tried it once."

"Did it work?"

"Yeah. I mean, we broke up, but it did work. He won't be yours if you don't ask. A closed mouth doesn't get fed," he pointed out. You thought about it. It was dark and quiet as you stared up at the stars, considering what he said.

"Is it me?" He whispered. You thought maybe you had just been hearing things. You didn't reply. "Y/N?" He asked again, in a more hopeful tone.

"What?" You replied in a small voice.

"I'd be yours if you asked," he whispered.

"Would you?" You replied, brushing your fingers against his as your feet kicked the ground to get the hammock swinging a little bit back and forth. He turned to you and looked you in the eyes and nodded before intertwining his fingers between yours.

"Without thinking twice." He paused and you listened to his breathing as you laid together in the hammock under the stars. "How could I resist?"

You smiled a little as you felt a euphoric feeling rush through your body. You sighed deeply, feeling content at the way this had gone so smoothly.

"I love you," you breathed into the pitch-black night.

"I love you too," he replied, giving your hand a quick squeeze as you smiled.
