Harry swallowed a clot of saliva with a gulp that very nearly ended his life. Once the sputtering had subsided, Harry James Potter The Great glanced up.
Glossy eyes scanned the two adults who had ventured to claim Harry James Potter as one of their own, wondering what could have led to these expressions.
Remus Lupin and Sirius Black were a happy, lively couple, who had been through every possible hardship, and somehow came out stronger for it on the other end.
They had their downs, of course. Everyone does. And from the way the two were intently staring at Harry, this might be one of them...
Not that they hadn't been through worse, Harry reasoned, still frantically scampering within his mind, to grasp what he could have fucked up badly enough to land him receiving absolutely crestfallen looks.
And Harry was really not joking, when he said the couple had been through a hell of a lot.
Over two years ago, at the end of Harry's fifth year of schooling, Sirius Black had fallen into The Veil.
It had been devastating. Harry had just skimmed against the hope of having a father-figure, before it was snatched right through his fingertips. Due to his own mistakes that too.
Remus had just gotten his best friend, his soulmate, back. Had just been reassured that Sirius Black was the man Remus had always knew the Pure-blood to be, not the murderer he had been portrayed as for over a decade.
And then he was gone. Sucked into The Veil.
However, things hadn't ended there.
Sirius Black, was an animagus, a secret that was heavily guarded, due to the slight illegality of it. Sirius had been an unregistered animagus for a very long time, and was quite accustomed to it.
Therefore, as a reflex, when thrown in the air towards The Veil, during that fateful battle over two years ago, Sirius Black had started to transform his shape. It was purely instinctual. Years of experience had taught the man that he landed better when he was a dog with four legs.
But, before the transformation had finished, Sirius had entered somewhere special. It was known as The Veil. On one side was the Land of Death, on the other was the world of the living. It was a given that Sirius Orion Black was a goner.
However, magic is a funny thing. It works in peculiar ways, and obeys no rules. It can be controlled, yes, but it is still a thing, a presence, an insubstantial phenomena, that exists around everyone.
And, it is finicky.
As Sirius Orion Black entered The Veil, his magic signature was quite peculiar. The thing that had once been Sirius Black, was no longer a corporeal being. The Veil registered it as neither a wizard nor a dog. Stuck somewhere in between Its forms, It ended up suspended in the Veil.
Sirius Orion Black was pronounced dead. In a cruel twist of fate, all his loved ones were set to mourning the brilliant young man, unaware that he was not completely lost.
Many moons had passed by the time it was discovered that Sirius was still in The Veil.
Remus had been the one to figure it out, and it had been Remus to spend months with barely an hour's worth of sleep, using castings to prolong the eventual collapse from exhaustion, while Remus researched.
But, in the end, it had been Ron who had figured it out. Ronald Bilious Weasley, well known as an airhead. Brawn with no brains.
Ron had asked the simple question, "Why don't we just accio him out?"
