(Harry's POV)

Harry had found his mate. Harry's mate was right there! The only problem was that his mate had locked the door on Harry. His mate didn't want Harry to find him or her.

"Please let me in!" Harry yelled once again, still banging on the door.

"No! Never! You won't hurt me again! I won't go back! I won't!" screamed whoever was on the other side of the door. Hurt him/her? Why would Harry hurt his mate?

"I'm not going to hurt you! I'd never hurt you! Open the door! I promise I won't hurt you!"

"Yeah, right! That's rich coming from you! You can try and take me back, but I'll just escape again! And I promise you this, I don't care how many times you capture me, I don't care how many times you beat me or draw blood, nothing but death will stop me from freeing my mother!" vowed the person on the other side of the door.

"Your mother?" Harry asked.

"Yes. I know you all have her. I know you're hurting her. But I will free her, even if it kills me."

"Wait. Slow down. Who's your mother? And for that matter, you are you?"

There was a pause. "You mean to tell me that you don't know who I am?" asked Harry's mate, as if they didn't believe that Harry really didn't know who they were.

"Nope. I have no idea. Please tell me, I have to help you."

(Draco's POV)

"Nope. I have no idea. Please tell me, I have to help you."

What did that even mean? Why would Potter chase Draco if he didn't know who he was? And why did he want—no he had said need— to help him? What possible reason would Harry Potter who was Draco's enemy, have to help him?

"If you don't know who I am, why would you chase me? And why would you want to help me?"

Potter took a breath, almost as if he was trying to gather courage, before he started speaking, "Because I'm a veela."

"So? Why would being a veela, make you want to help me? Don't you have a mate to protect?"

"You are my mate!" exclaimed Potter.

"...what?" asked Draco, baffled.

"You're my mate. I was walking in the hallways when I sensed you. I don't know who you are. I just know what you are. You're my mate." After a moment of silence, when Harry probably expected Draco to say something, Harry hesitantly asked, "So who are you?"

Draco didn't know what to say. He didn't know what to tell him. Draco knew there was no way he was going to tell Harry that he was Draco Malfoy. Draco still wasn't completely sure that Harry wasn't lying.

"Umm...I can't tell you."

"What? Why not?"

"I can't tell you why not."

"Why?" asked Harry, sounding confused. But then again, Harry usually sounded confused.

"I don't trust you, Harry Potter."

"How do you know I'm Harry Potter?"

"I recognized your voice."

"So we're close enough that you'd recognize my voice?"

"I don't think 'close' would be the right word describe us," said Draco, chuckling to himself.

And then Draco realized what he was doing. He was chuckling, smiling, for the first time in months, with his archenemy. Draco had enough on his plate, without a lovesick Potter. That is, if being a veela guaranteed loving the person who is your mate. Draco wasn't sure what being a veela meant. Draco would need to research the topic. Draco would also have to think about what to do about Potter. He had enough to deal with already, he really didn't need this too. Most of all, Draco needed time to think, to process, to consult Blaise, and to figure out what to do.

"I-I have to go," Draco stuttered. That was odd, Draco barely ever stuttered. All the stress of everything must really be getting to him, he thought.

"Wait! Don't go!" Draco scanned around him looking for an escape. He saw that the classroom he had stumbled into had a window, which was open a little bit. It might be a tight fit...but as a ferret he might just be able to slip through.

Draco's only concern was if Harry followed him. If Harry really was a veela, that meant he had found Draco my sensing him. Which means he might be able to follow him again using the same "sensing" thing.

"Don't worry, I'll be back here tomorrow, I just need time to process everything," Draco said, not sure if he was lying or not. He'd have to see what happened between now and then. If by morning the whole school knew that Draco Malfoy was somewhere in Hogwarts, or if by then there were Aurors surrounding the school, then there'd be no way in hell that Draco would come to meet Harry again.

"...okay," Harry said, sounding reluctant. That was all Draco needed in order to turn into a ferret and dart out the window.

Draco walked parallel to the school for awhile, until he found a window back in to the school that was close to the ground and partly open. He crawled back in and exited the classroom the window had led into. Once in the hallway, Draco turned back into a human for a minute or so just to get his bearings. Once Draco figured out where he was in the school, and what path he'd have to take to get back to the slytherin dorms, he turned back into a ferret.

Luckily Draco didn't see another soul on the way back to the portrait that led into the slytherin common room. When Draco got to the portrait, he said the password, in his ferret form, forgetting the fact that he was speaking in ferret. "Featherskin." To Draco's surprise, the door actually swung open. Apparently the snake could understand ferret. Draco guessed that whatever magic allowed the snake to understand humans let them understand any creature.

Draco made his way to Blaise' room, turned human again, and shut and locked the door. "Blaise wake up," Draco said. Nothing. Draco went over and gently shook his friend, "Wake up," he said again. Nothing. Draco shoved Blaise out of the bed, so that he landed on the hard hardwood floor with a loud thump.

"OW! WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!! I WAS PEACEFULLY SLEEPING AND YOU JUST PUSHED ME OUT OF MY BED!" yelled Blaise.

"Shh! If you keep yelling like that, you'll wake up the whole castle!" shushed Draco.

Blaise sat up, rubbing his head while pouting. "Well you would deserve the whole castle hearing me and discovering you, for pushing me out of my bed while I was sleeping!"

"I'm sorry, but I had a good reason! Something happened."

Blaise got up and sat up on his bed, legs crossed, staring at Draco expectantly. "Well, if you're gonna wake me up in the middle of the night, you better have something important to tell me," Blaise warned.

"Unfortunately I do," Draco said.

A/N: See! I did it! Not a cliffhanger! *dramatic bow* You're welcome!

This chapter is published on Saturday, January 2, 2020. Yes I know I just published a chapter yesterday. This chapter is brought to you by my parents' oversocialness. Before COVID, we always had at least one party every weekend, and when I was very little, there were weekends where we had every meal except breakfast at someone else's house. Now with Corona, most of these parties have become virtual using zoom. Or we'll still have like one family over with masks and social distancing. The point is, we still have social events despite corona, the events are just different in nature. And basically, I'm not an extrovert, meaning usually I'm sitting there awkwardly while the adults all gossip and talk and stuff. So I've taken to writing on my phone during these social calls. This entire chapter was written during the span of one dinner party. And also the people are still here right now, even though I've finished writing the entire chapter, and it's past 11pm. Which actually isn't that late, 'cause pre-COVID, I've had parties that have gone past 1 or 2 in the morning. So ya. I'm probably gonna start writing the chapter for this coming Friday. Ok imma stop ranting now about my overly social parents.
