The walk back to Ubuyashiki's mansion was silent, a somber mood permeating in the air. Tomioka walked behind me; a stark contrast from the few weeks prior. The high humidity combined with the harsh sunlight made for horrible walking conditions, causing sweat to drip down my face.
Deciding to check on Tomioka, I strained my neck backwards, trying to get a good glimpse of the elusive man. He stared at the ground, his footsteps slightly more audible than usual. Noticing his slow pace, I quickly stopped in my tracks, waiting for him to catch up. His moments were noticeably sloppy, his feet slightly dragging across the floor, his arms out of sync with his walk.
A sudden gust of wind flew by us, flinging his hair out of his face. Revealing his red, puffy eyes, my heart began to throb with empathy. His mouth was drawn into a tight line as if he never wanted to speak again.
"Tomioka..." I whispered as I grasped his blood-stained hands into mine. Even though his hands should have been broken in the encounter with the demon, he didn't wince as I embraced his hands. "Didn't you say we would be lovers now? Shouldn't you tell me what's hurting you so I can help you?" I tenderly let go of his hands and brought his head into my chest.
"When you're hurting, I also hurt Tomioka. You can trust me and tell me anything. I'll always be here for you." I walked us over to the side of the road, sitting down against a tree. Appreciating the pleasant break from the direct sunlight, we sat together. Tomioka's head rested in my lap as I ran my hands through his ruffled hair. Specks of sunlight filtered through the leaves of the tree, dotting his face with sunlight freckles. I chuckled at the sight, drilling the picture of freckled Tomioka into my brain. He frowned as he saw me laughing at his face, using his hand to wipe his face.

I stared into the face of the peerless beauty who took me as her lover who laughed as I rested in her lap. 'Do I have anything strange on my face? It wouldn't be a surprise after that fight.' I rubbed my face with my hands, which only made Kocho laugh harder. Sighing, I gave up trying to figure out the reasoning behind her madness, instead deciding where to start with my story.

It was a warm night, fireflies lighting up the front yard. I laughed as I frolicked around, trying to capture them in my hands. Tsutako watched from the porch, her warm, calm smile plastered on her face as always. It would a regular night, if not for the rustling in the trees next to the house. We both immediately got alert, scared that the noise would be a bear.
Apparently a bear had been going around the village, killing people every night. Instead of a huge, lumbering bear, a humanoid figure leaped from the trees. Whatever it was, it wasn't human.
Tsutako quickly got up and ran towards me. Her smile was gone, but she didn't ooze an ounce of fear. She pulled me by the hand and ran towards the town center. The creature pursued us and it was apparent we weren't going to make it in time. In a split second, she pushed me aside and stopped running, instead, facing the disgusting creature chasing us.
The thing pounced on her, violently attacking her. She looked back, with her usual calm smile. She was speaking, but I couldn't hear what she said due to blood rushing in my head. The only words I could read from her lips were "I love you".
Frozen in fear, my legs locked up and I fell onto the floor. However, the creature I would eventually learn to be a demon, left me to be, dragging my precious sister away. The next day, I would try to explain what happened to the townspeople, but they all called me paranoid and hysterical. They consoled me for the first few weeks, but after months had passed, the villagers began to call me insane and unsavable.
It was only when a strange passerby named Urodaki wandered into our village, someone finally believed my retelling of that night. He took me to his home, where I met two similar kids who faced similar situations to myself. They were my best friends, my family, my rivals, the most important people to me in my life.

"But due to my incompetence, my weakness, I killed them. I have no one to blame for everyone's death except myself." He never broke down throughout his story, talking with a nostalgic and regretful tone instead. "I shouldn't even be here today. Those three deserve to be here, living their best lives and being strong. I'm not even a real pillar. I'm just a stand-in. When the time comes, I don't know if I can protect you."
Still raw from retelling his dark past, Tomioka closed his eyes and stopped talking, leaving me to pick up the conversation. "Even though they died, be thankful for the life you have. They died so you could continue to live, find your passions, find your meaning in life."
Gathering all of the courage I could muster, I decided to ask the question I wanted to know for a long time, one that the answer could make or break my future. "Tomioka," I took a deep breath to calm my nerves before continuing. "After all this, let's say that we defeat Muzan and eradicate all demons. What do you want to do in the future? What are your aspirations?"
He sat up at my questions, tilting his head upwards to think. He gave me a small smile as he began to answer. "I think I would want to start a family. I think I would name the children after the people who gave me this life." He put his hand on my chin and brought our faces together, leaving our lips only centimeters apart. "And I already know who I want the mother to be."
