My Day Off

I huff in annoyance as I purse my lips to keep the lit cigarette in my mouth while ducking beneath the dagger sailing over my head. This wasn't exactly how I'd intended to spend my Saturday morning but sometimes it's fight or be captured and there's no way I'm going to lose. Not to him. I scowl up at my attacker as I draw my sword with one hand and take the cigarette from my mouth with the other.

"You couldn't have waited for me to finish my smoke?" I sigh.

"You always have to seize the right moment when it presents itself." Obi retorts, a cocky smirk crossing his lips.

I swing my sword at him, our blades screeching at the contact as I take the offensive. With a lot of effort, I manage to have the lanky dark haired man backed against a tree.

"I don't see why you choose to attack me, Obi. You'll never win. Now, why don't we both take a break so I can smoke in peace, eh?"

I grin and keep him pinned with my sword as I draw daggers and stab them through his clothes into the tree. When I'm done, I back away and admire my work while taking another drag.

"Why are you so annoying?" He huffs as he tries to free himself.

"If it makes you feel better, I'm only annoying to you. It's one of the great pleasures of my life. You know I was taking the day off today, perhaps I should continue my day off and relax? You can let yourself out, right?"

"Arowen I swear if you leave me here I'll-" I step away from him again after securing my red scarf around his mouth.

"There, much better. Well, take care Obi. I'd bring you in today but again it's my day off."

I blow him a kiss and chuckle as I walk off into the forest again.

Obi and I have known each other for the past seven years now. We started out as acquaintances and the occasional partner but soon became great friends and thick as thieves. We were inseparable. Then we had a falling out and one thing led to another... now we're continuously trying to cash in on the other's bounty. The money is just too good to resist and we'd get to prove once and for all who the better person is. It's just that simple. Money talks. I flick the butt of my cigarette to the ground and step on it as I stretch my arms over my head, enjoying the sound of my spine popping. I'm getting old...

"Arowen!"

"Oh dear God Obi, what is it now?" I call back with a huff.

"Run!"

I arch a brow and turn in time to find Obi running very quickly past me and into the forest. Well then, that's strange.

"Well shit."

Two masked men come into the clearing from the direction Obi had come from and I mentally curse Obi. What did he do to attract the attention of the Foxes? Regardless, if they're here that means their leader shouldn't be too far away. The Pack doesn't live around here so what are they doing here?

"Oh look Brother, we found another target." The one on the left speaks up as he takes a step toward me.

"Two birds, one stone. Shall we collect her-" His brother takes a step forward and I take another back. I have my sword but twins creep me out so bad.

"-Or go for the runner?"

"Why not both?" They chuckle and I curse again.

As they run toward me I quickly light another cigarette then draw my sword.

"Twins are so disgusting." I huff. "What are Rabbit's minions doing so far from home without their leashes?"

"Rabbit has been-"

"-Disposed of. We're in charge now."

"Great. So when I kill both of you for annoying me I can put on a mask like a child and take control of your little group of misfits?"

"Don't worry Doll-"

"-We'll make your death painless."

I'm so going to murder Obi next time I see him. He ran off like a coward and left me to deal with this mess. He knows I can't stand twins. My cigarette falls out of my mouth as one of the Foxes trips me and the other swings his sword down at me. I hit the ground and immediately shuffle backward away from them. Yeah, Obi is dead. If I die first though, I'll haunt him for eternity. My back hits the trunk of a tree and I curse again but I'm suddenly jerked to the side and dragged through the forest away from them. What the hell? I scramble to get to my feet and realize it's Obi. So maybe he's not entirely useless after all.

"What the hell did you do!?" I snap.

"I didn't do anything! Someone left me stabbed into a tree and they found me!"

"Why are they after you then?"

"They're after you as well, Idiot. They want what we do."

"Well if anyone is cashing in on your bounty, it's me. Also you owe me a cigarette because I lost half of mine back there. Now shut up, we have to lose them not leave a very loud trail straight to us."

Obi and I crash through the trees and immediately tumble down the steep hill I definitely didn't see earlier. The Foxes are still trailing us but hopefully we can finally lose them. It's still my day off and I'm trying not to die. Obi owes me. Oh great, there's a rock wall to break our fall. That's amazing. Fantastic really. I close my eyes to brace for impact but it never comes. We finally stop on something soft and I exhale before opening my eyes. The something soft is apparently Obi's body and we're practically nose to nose. Disgusting. I move to get off of him but he wraps one arm around my waist and the other covers my mouth. Oh hell no...

"Stop. Moving." He mouths and I hear the footsteps near us.

Apparently the vines on the rock wall actually concealed a cave entrance and we're hidden from view. Maybe we'll finally be free of the Foxes. The movements fade away and we wait for a few moments longer before he releases me and I punch him in the mouth as I sit up.
