Obi and I escape the prince and his attendants and make our way through the trees to a large open field. Normally, we'd be able to see the millions of stars that make up the sky, but the storm clouds are here along with the scent of rain. We stop running and I can't believe we made it out. That was more fun than I've had since we had our falling out.
"That was so much fun!" I laugh as I smile up at him.
"I'm glad you had fun, but we may need to head home before the rain starts."
"Nonsense Obi." I shake my head. "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, sometimes you have to play in the rain!"
"That sounds like philosophical nonsense."
He pulls me into a kiss and as we part, the rain starts. Despite the summer warmth, the rain is cool and it makes me squeal as it soaks us.
"Let's finish our dance, shall we?" I call out over the rumbling thunder.
He holds his hand out and we start to dance in the middle of the field. I can't even feel the rain on me anymore or hear the thunder. All I can see is Obi smiling at me as he spins me around. It's like nothing else exists. Looking up at him, I think I finally feel the true 'love' feeling Obi described. I was pretty sure I loved him when he described it to me, but now it's right here in front of me. I stop our dance and pull him into a kiss. I slowly pull away and tell him that I love him, though I'm not sure he can hear me.
"I love you too." He mumbles against my lips before pulling me back in.
I wake up curled up against Obi's chest. I'm not sure when we made it back home or most of what happened last night, but I remember dancing in the storm with him. I smile softly and stretch before wiggling closer to the warmth. Even back when Obi and I were simply partners, I never expected I would fall for him. I never wanted to date, marry, fall in love, have children, anything. I just wanted to do what I wanted when I wanted and not marry that creep. Meeting Obi was just a bonus.
Obi and I met seven years ago, shortly after I ran away from home. I had no idea where to go or what to do. I was never allowed out of the home unless escorted and that was only to travel to events and marriage interviews. I knew no one outside of the noble rankings or even how to defend myself. I had one bag on my back with two changes of clothes, my clock, and a stash of cigarettes I stole from my caregiver. I somehow survived the forest and made it to the outskirts of a village before a storm rolled in and I was ambushed by The Foxes. Obi happened to be passing through and heard me scream. He came to my rescue and brought me to a safe house for the night. I didn't tell him anything about me beyond the false name I created for myself and that I was looking for somewhere to stay. The rest is history. He was the one who taught me to fight, to steal, to survive beyond my home's walls. I owe him everything.
I gently kiss Obi's forehead before getting out of bed to clean myself up and sneak out to the market to get food for breakfast. I'll leave him a note so he doesn't think I've been abducted, but I know if I wake him before I go, he'll get mad that I'm trying to go on my own since the prince is lurking around. I think I can handle myself though. I'll be gone for like ten minutes. Once I'm dressed, I scribble out a note and leave it on the pillow beside him before stealing a dagger or two to hide in my cloak.
I make it to the market easily and make sure my hood is up as I make my way through the stalls. I've been trying to listen to the chatter as I grab what I need and a few other items, and so far it doesn't sound like the prince is in the village anymore. That's a relief. I'm still not going to try to linger out here though. Prince or not we still have bounties and enemies. I pay for my items so I don't draw attention to myself and head back toward the safety of home. I'm sure he's awake and mad that I'm gone by now.
"Arowen?"
I turn slightly at the sound of my name and arch a brow as I catch sight of Doe. What the hell is she doing here? The prince and his lackeys picked her and her friends up a few days ago. There's no way she got out. A cocky smirk crosses her face and she calls out that she found me. That's great. I hate dealing with The Pack. I sigh and pull the dagger from my basket before placing it on the ground beside me.
"You're interrupting my peaceful morning."
"So sorry, but when the First Prince of Clarines wants your head more than mine, who can resist?"
Well shit. Breakfast might be a little later.
As I move to attack her, I hear several people move to surround us. I'm tackled to the ground almost instantly and my arms are wrenched behind my back once the dagger is taken from me.
"Arowen, you're under arrest for your crimes against the Kingdom of Clarines." That's the prince. Of course.
I roll my eyes as his super tall attendants forces me to my feet and I meet Doe's triumphant gaze. To my surprise, the blonde lady and another knight grab Doe and start to tie her hands as well.
"What the hell!? You told me if I found one of them I'd go free!"
"Serves you right, Bitch." I snicker.
"You were actually told that you might get to go free, not that you would be."
"Oh Hell yes. Current situation aside, you guys are amazing. Sadly, I can't stick around though, but it's been fun."
I kick the tall man in the shin and elbow the prince in the ribs which is rather disappointingly all it takes to break free so I start to run.
