Jameson clamped his hands over his ears despite knowing it would not block out the sound. The ringing was inside his head, it was unbearable and forever ongoing. He just needed something to block out the sound. Some other noise to distract him from the incessant high-pitched ringing that made him feel like lashing out at someone. Anyone.

Even Anti.

There was a strange softness inside his chest as his mind drifted to thoughts of Anti—some butterflies made of a feeling he didn't expect. JJ wanted his captor to be here and distract him. Anti was the only thing breaking the monotony of the dingy basement. The only time JJ wasn't hyper-focusing on his tinnitus was when he was listening to Anti's voice. He was sure Anti loved hearing his own voice, too. He always spoke to fill the silence.

The one thing common between the two of them was that they couldn't bear silence, for opposite reasons. While JJ despised silence for the overwhelming torture it brought to his ears, Anti despised it because of its underwhelming nature and the boredom it brought. They were two sides of the same coin.

The analogy and the implications of it gave JJ more butterflies.

He grabbed his head, nails digging into the sides of his skull. It was too loud to ignore. His thoughts weren't noisy enough to keep his mind off of it and he was pretty sure it had gotten louder recently. If he could, he would talk over the noise, hum, sing, whatever he could. But he could not.

The high-pitched shrieking was almost loud enough to overpower the sound of the basement door opening and closing. He didn't recognize the footprints as something from outside his head until he saw Anti stop at the bottom of the stairs across the room. The strings holding JJ captive tightened around his limbs.

He would be good this time. He would listen to Anti because of the prospect of freedom. Because maybe Anti would allow him to leave this basement and go to a place where his own body wasn't working against him. Perhaps then he could drown out the never-ending screech in his head.
