Chapter 9: What happened to Jay?

A/n: I hope you are enjoying the story so far! Anyway, I'm aiming to finish this book before Christmas, so expect more frequent updates!

Jay's POV

"It's your brother, Morro." And with those words, my heart breaks.

She- She likes Morro? Then I don't stand a chance.

I ask her more to keep the conversation going, putting on a cheerful tone. But inside, I'm broken.

Of course she likes him. Of course she sees me as a friend. Of course I'm nothing.

I'm in the middle of my brooding when my phone beeps. I take it out of my pocket and see a message:

Cole: Wanna join me and the guys downtown? We're having a party! Come to the atm body!

I frown, and quickly make up an excuse to go. What Cole said to me was actually our code for: Bad guys at downtown bank. They're armed.

I quickly shut the door to my apartment, going inside first, and change into my Ninja suit. I then quickly open the window, jump onto my balcony,  and close it. I then proceed to jump to the rooftop.

I quickly raced on the rooftops of countless other people, before reaching downtown.

I quickly located the bank and guess what, I came just in time to catch Lloyd being thrown across the floor.

"Woah! Thanks, Jay. These new guys are more powerful than before. Be careful." He warned me.

I prop him back up, then dive into the battle myself. Then, I see it.

A goon aiming his gun at Cole! I have to help him!

And everything that happens next seems to go in slow motion for me.

"Cole! Look out!" I say as I lunge forward, knocking him out of the way, when I suddenly feel an increasing pain in my back. And that's when I realise, I had been shot.

And as the pain starts numbing, darkness begins clouding my vision. When suddenly.........

Everything goes black.

No one's POV

The next moments are seemingly spent in slow motion as well. When Jay's cry rings out, all the Ninja turn to see him falling.

"Jay!" The combined voice of them all rang out as they rushed towards their fallen comrade.

Cole was the first to reach him, landing an uppercut at Jay's attacker's jaw and throwing the guy away from his best friend. He knelt down to him, and started crying his name.

Zane reached him next, kneeling down and applying all of his medical knowledge in desperate hope to revive, or at least to keep Jay alive till he got medical attention.

Morro arrived at his brother's body, kneeling and screaming for someone to call an ambulance, afraid for Jay's fate.

Lloyd came, while calling the ambulance and explaining what was happening while still in tears, feeling immense loss.

Kai, however, broke. In one single moment of fury, further fuelled by the loss of his brother-in-arms, he burst into flames, taking out every goon at once, before calming down enough to get near Jay without burning Everyone. Waves of so many unbearable feelings at once, remorse, guilt, anger, sadness, loss crashed into his mind, meddling his thoughts.

............(Time skip to the hospital)................

Cole's POV

Why?

Just why?

Why did that happen?

As I'm sitting in the waiting room at the hospital while Jay is being treated, I think. Why did he save me when he knew he'd get shot?

Why would he- "Mr. Brookstone, you're allowed to see Mr. Walker now." My thoughts are interrupted by the nurse. At least I can see Jay now.

I follow the nurse along with Kai, Zane and Morro. Even if only Morro and I are allowed to see him, Kai and Zane also want to know how he's doing. Though it's a bit odd why four people aren't allowed to see him right now. Lloyd went to meet with the doctors and cops as he represents the Ninja.

But as I enter the room, I see two people already sobbing over his body. As I get closer, I see that they're Nya and Seliel.

When I finally arrive at Jay's bed, I see him still floating in and out of consciousness. One moment he's groaning and trying to move, the next he's unconscious.

Nya's POV

"Jay! Please! Wake up!" I say to him as he's resting on the hospital bed.

Oh god, why did I ever tell that stupid lie?! I should have just come clean to him, told him that I liked him, and all this would never have happened.

I see Cole coming over and immediately flare up. I'm sure of it, that he has something to do with this. The weird outfits, the gunshot on his back, they all have to be related.

"Not so fast. Tell me the truth of how this happened." I say to him, gritting my teeth and putting on a low and cold voice. It's hard to think like this, but I know, I just know that the doctors are lying by saying that it's a case of self harm. Jay would never do this.

But then, I didn't think that Jay would like me. Would he have harmed himself because of me........ No..... Ugh, Nya, pull yourself together!

"I.... I thought the doctors told you what it was." He said. But I can't help but notice that look in his eyes telling it's something else.

"I know what they told was a lie, Cole. And then, how do you explain the clothes he's wearing that make him look like a Nin...." I stop speaking as I realise it. Jay's a Ninja.

Cole seems to know what I realised. "Yes, Nya. It's true. Jay's a Ninja. Like the rest of us." He says, pointing towards a group of people.

But when I see them I have to take a step back to keep my balance. Among them I see Morro, Zane, Lloyd, and.... Kai?!

I have to take a step back again when I see him. This time, not because of shock, but because Seliel is also feeling dizzy and I need to keep her upright in front of her brother.

And as I turn to face Kai, I hear shouts of what I dreaded.

"Save him!" "Keep him alive!" "Stabilize him!" "Don't let go of him!" "Fight it, boy!"
I hear the medical staff shout as they shove us out of the room and close the door behind them.

But, as soon as that door opens again after about half an hour, my heart breaks.

"We couldn't save him."

A/N: Just kidding, XD. I'd never let this story end sadly. Only two more chapters to go, though, then this book will be finished. So, see ya later! Bye!
