I woke up to someone softly snoring beneath me. I realized Colson and I were still lying on the couch, in an awkward position I might add. Colson’s long legs dangled off the edge of the sofa, his arms doing the same. I was pressed to his abdomen, my arms crushed beneath me. I gently pushed myself up, stirring Colson in the process.

“What’s up?” He asked groggily, rubbing at his eyes. I planted a kiss on the tip of his nose. “Nothing.” I looked around for my phone to find the time. “It’s three in the morning. I’m gonna go climb in my bed.” I gave him a sly smile. “…Want to come?” He jumped up, his energy flowing. “It’s just to sleep!” I yelled after him. I heard him snicker in reply.

I followed him into my room. He sat on my bed, as eager as a puppy. I silently got under the covers and buried my head into a pillow. He did the same, resting his arms over me. I traced his tattoos with my finger. He shivered under my light touch. “Riles,” He murmured sleepily. “Yeah?”

“Love you.” He snuggled into me. I turned over to face him. “Love you too.” I slowly slid my hands under his shirt, loving the warmth. He placed his palms under my tank top, touching my stomach. “I’m thinking of getting a tattoo,” I whispered. He moved his hands to my back. “Of what?” He asked with a grin. “I dunno. Maybe like a butterfly, or a heart.” I told him. I honestly didn’t know what kind of tattoo I wanted.

“I really didn’t see you as the tattoo type, babe.” Colson informed me. I rolled my eyes. “Then what type do you see me as?” I asked haughtily. “Nothing Riles! Damn.” He kissed my forehead. “I’m going to sleep.” He turned over so that my face greeted his back. He grabbed my arm from behind and rested it around his waist. I giggled, pulling myself closer to him.

“Yeah bitch! Yeah bitch! Call me Steve-O!” I jumped, my ringtone scaring me to death. Colson looked at me and smirked at my song choice. I ignored him, grabbing my cell. It was my mom. I pressed answer and held the phone up to my ear. “Mom?”

“Rilyana! Tаm an сun?” She asked in Bulgarian with worry. “Mom, yes, I’m here. What’s going on?” I moved so I sat on the edge of the bed. Colson was behind me, listening intently to the conversation. “Honey, it’s your father. We were getting coffee, and suddenly he was fighting this man! The man pulled a knife on him and…” Mom stopped in midsentence, letting out a sob. “He’s in the hospital right now.” I was on my feet in an instant. I pulled a shirt over my head and shoved my feet into my Nikes. “I’m on my way.” I told her. She hung up.

“What wrong?” Colson asked me. He got up and put on his Chucks. “My Dad is in the hospital. I gotta go.” I sped into the living room and grabbed my keys. “I’m coming with you.” He said, chasing after me. I gave him a quizzical look. “Don’t look at me like that, Riles. I care about your parents too. I’m coming.” He took the car keys from my trembling hands and set a hand on the small of my back. He led me to the truck.

“I’ll drive. You really stressed right now.” I just nodded. He kept talking. I noticed he did that when he was nervous. “He’ll be fine. I’m pretty sure. Yeah, he will. I hope.” He babbled. He parked in the front of the hospital and we climbed out of the car.

“Excuse me. What room is Samson Dimitrov in?” I asked the secretary hurriedly. She pressed a few keys on her keyboard. “Only immediate family can go see him right now. I’m sorry.” I hit the desk in frustration. “My brother and I need to see our father. Now.” I commanded. She looked at my olive skin, comparing it to Colson’s whiteness. She finally sighed. “He’s in Room 3004.” I grabbed Colson’s hand and jumped into the nearest elevator. I pressed the button to the third floor rapidly. Colson gently moved my fingers away from the button and squeezed them lightly.

Before I knew it, we were standing in front of Room 3004. My heart was pounding so hard in my chest that it hurt. Colson opened the door, seeing that I was frozen in place. My mother sat beside the hospital bed, her face pink and her eyes tired. I rushed into her arms then, just needing her strength. Tears streamed my cheeks as I glanced over at my dad. His eyes were closed, his face pale. Tubes were in his nostrils to help him breathe. Many wires were attached to him. They were supporting his life. I could see his chest rising and falling with every breath he took.

I walked over to his side slowly. I put my trembling hand over his. “They gave him some pain medication and it made him sleepy.” Mom croaked from behind me. “He’s going to be okay.” Those five words lifted a weight off of my shoulders. I ran to Colson and buried my face on his chest. He wrapped his arms around me tightly, resting his chin on my hair.

“Colson, how are you?” Mom asked him. “I’m doing well, Ms. R. Are you okay?” I looked over at her. She shook her head. “I’m not that good, but I’ll get better.” She sat back in her chair. I cleared my throat. “Tell me what happened.” I said softly. Mom wiped at her eyes for a second before she began.

“Your father and I went out for coffee. We were talking and suddenly a group of loud teenagers walk into the shop. Your father asks them to quiet down, and then they make a disturbing remark about my appearance. Before I knew it, your father and one of the teens are toe to toe, arguing with each other. The teen pulls out a blade and stabs y-your f-father and-“ She stops. Suddenly the door opens. A doctor and a nurse walk in. “Good, er, morning everyone.” The doctor says. “I’m Dr. Vaughn.” Mom stands again to shake his hand. “I’m Kimberly Raeva. This is my daughter Riley and her boyfriend Colson. Where is Dr. Armisen?” She questioned.

“Dr. Armisen had an operation that she was needed at. We are just here to check your husband’s vitals and give him another dose of the medication.” Mom stayed silent, not correcting the doctor when he said “husband”. “So how long will he have to stay here?” Colson asked the doctor. “Well, I’d say a couple of days, just so we can keep an eye on his injuries.” Dr. Vaughn answered.

“Unfortunately, visiting hours are over. I apologize, but it’s our hospital rules.” The nurse finally spoke up. Mom nodded. “Okay. When is the earliest we can come back?” The nurse walked over to Dad and began checking his blood pressure. “Visitors can come as early as nine.” She said. I checked my phone, seeing it was four. We would soon be back. The bags under Mom’s eyes told me she needed to rest.

“Come on, Ma. We will take you home.” I grabbed her hand and lead her all the way to the truck. Colson drove us back home. Mom saw his motorcycle in the driveway, but didn’t question it. “I’ll be back to drive you guys, if that’s alright with you Ms. R.” Colson said as he walked us to the front door. “Of course, Colson.” Mom headed inside to give us time alone. He kissed my forehead and ruffled my hair a bit. He put his snapback on my head. “See you.” I said before going in. I heard him start his bike as I closed the door.

Mom sat on the couch, staring straight ahead. “You should get some sleep, Mom.” I suggested. She shook her head. “No. I’m the old one. You need more sleep than I do.” I crossed my arms over my chest, my stubborn side kicking in. “I don’t want you to be the next one laying in that hospital bed.” Her expression softened. “Alright. Okay. I’m going.” She left to go to her room, shutting the door behind her.

I snuck into Dad’s room. I got into his bed and let the tears flow freely. I fell asleep there. I don’t know if I was dreaming or not, but I thought I felt Mom getting into the bed beside me.
