My daddy loves me,I know this for a fact. He used to tell me all the time that I was the best thing to ever happen to him.I haven't seen daddy in a long time.Mommy died when I was 7, and ever since then it's just been daddy and I. Daddy was sad a lot though, mommy's death really took a lot out of him. There were times where daddy couldn't even get out of bed.
It was alright though, I could take care of him in those moments. I knew basic things like how to heat up soup and how to do small loads of laundry. Even though daddy was sad he still alway made my life the best it could be. We both knew daddy wasn't perfect, but it was ok. He was enough for me. A little while after mommy died daddy had to go to the hospital, I think the sadness finally got to him.
Auntie came to watch me for a little bit after he left. We didn't get along very well. Auntie was a harsh woman, she showed love a lot differently than daddy did. Her love was strict and restrictive. But it was still love, and I was thankful for that. She wasn't around very often. Auntie had her routine that she made sure never to stray from.. Make dinner at 6pm tuck me in at 7, be out the door by 8, and come back home at 11am the next day.
She did this every day without fail. I only came out of my room once when she came home. She stumbled around the apartment like a weirdo, tripping on invisible things. I don't know why she moved around like that. Once she saw me she started yelling things about how I shouldn't be awake and if I was smart I would go back to bed. I always waited for her to call me out after that.
I didn't really enjoy Auntie when she came back anyways. I don't really know what she did when she left. Maybe she worked, or maybe she was out having fun with friends, I would never know. What I do know though is that Auntie didn't stay very long. She didn't even tell me she was leaving. I woke up one morning to a note and a kitchen full of canned food.
Auntie was a woman of few words, and so was the note. It was basically just a small apology with a promise at the end that she would come back for me. She said the food was mine and that she needed to figure some things out.
The food ran out pretty quickly though so now I have to find new ways to get food when I'm hungry. Sometimes I go to the neighbors, other times the McDonalds down the street, but lately it's been getting harder and harder to find stuff and I have to go far away. I saw a notice on the door this morning, it said EVICTION NOTICE in big bold letters. What does that mean?
The big man came pounding on the door again too, he's been doing that every couple of days. I don't know if he knows Auntie is gone. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't, Auntie didn't talk to many people in the apartment complex. I just wished I knew what he wanted. Maybe I could help him. I was too scared to ask though, his knocks were loud and his voice was booming. Today I have to go out for food again. I think I'm gonna try the 7-Eleven, they have slushies.
After grabbing my food from the 7-Eleven I started jogging back to the apartment. It was beginning to get dark and I'm still a little scared of the dark so the faster I could get home the better. Walking up the stairs I saw him! Down the hall I saw the big man outside of my apartment. Only this time the apartment door was wide open and he was inside! I saw him throwing out all of my things, even Mr.snuggles! How dare he! Mr.snuggles is a fine upstanding citizen and he has rights!
I started storming right up to man. "Excuse me mister just what do you think you're doing!" I yelled at him. "Well" he responded " rents due and you little lady haven't paid your fair share." Rent? Fair share? " I'm 10 years old and I can't even get a job. I just learned basic addition. Do you think anywhere is going to hire me with just basic math skills?!?". " Sorry kid but in this economy I can't be giving out any handouts not even to the minors of the world. I got a family to feed, kids to raise, you understand dontcha?"
Well when he put it like I couldn't really fight him, taxes are taxes and the law is the law, guess i'll just have to figure something out. " Alright mister ya got me, can you at least let me collect some of my stuff?" He reached inside and pulled out my beat up purple dora suitcase. "Already got it for ya kid." He pushed the suitcase into my chest " oh and don't forget this little guy." He said as he all but threw Mr.Snuggles into my arms. "Best of luck to ya kid" he said gruffly " now scram" he said as he pushed me towards the stairs. " The renters in this place are just getting younger and younger" he mumbled as I walked away.
Well now what? I didn't have a home, parents, money, or even a job! I'm just not cut out for this life. Slowly I made my way out of the apartment complex. By now it was completely dark outside, mommy wouldn't want me out this late.
I continued my journey down the road until I could faintly spot the lights of the park up ahead. I decided to head in that direction, maybe I could find a place to sleep, or better yet a swing to take all my troubles away. Ah a good swing that's just what I could use at this moment.
Slowly I made my way to the swing sets, I set my suitcase down and climbed on. Mr.Snuggles sat snugly on my lap. Well this isn't as fun as I thought it would be. I can't really push myself and just sitting here is kinda boring. I am 10 after all and 10 year olds should be able to have fun at the park but instead I'm just tired. I looked around trying to find a place where I could sleep.
The tunnel by slide was calling my name, just begging me to crawl inside. So I did exactly that, picking up my belongings I shimmed my body in the tunnel. Using Mr.Snuggles as a pillow I finally laid down, the scratched in graffiti penises lulling me into slumber as I counted them one by one. Slowly my eyes started to close until I finally slipped into darkness.
