Waking up on the couch wasn't the most comfortable feeling in the world. It made my back ache and definitely left a more than unpleasant crick in my neck. But the feeling in my heart more than made up for all the aches and pains. I hadn't expected Sage to come talk to me at all last night, and I definitely didn't expect her to apologize.
Looking back on how I reacted and I was definitely partially to blame, my anger blinded me to a lot of things. I was working on it though, and from the looks of how last night went my methods were definitely working. The progress that we had made last night was the most we had made in the entire two months she had been here. I know opening up was hard for her but I was glad she was able to get some of her insecurities out in the open.
Hopefully I was able to reassure her a little bit, at least enough for her to feel slightly more comfortable. I meant every word that I said last night, and I hope she could see that. In the short time that I had known her Sage had become a big part of my life, bigger than she knew. I would stay around for as long as she needed me, even longer if I had too. I wasn't her biological family but I could try my best to fill in the gaps.
When I woke up I expected Sage to still be on my lap where we fell asleep, but was surprised to find her gone. I didn't have to look too far though because before I could even worry I heard a loud clanging sound come from the kitchen. I assumed it was Sage as it was still fairly early in the morning and the boys liked to sleep in for as long as possible.
Getting up with a yawn I started to stretch the sleep away, or at least attempt to get rid of it. Walking towards the kitchen the noises continued to grow. Finally I made it into the kitchen, staring at the scene before me. Nothing could have prepared me for what I came face to face with.
"Surprise!"
I heard Sage's proud voice call from behind the island. A surprise it was. Every surface in the kitchen was covered in flour and sugar, the counters, the stove, the floor, even the fridge had white on it. I looked back over to Sage a bright smile covering her face. "I made you breakfast all by myself! I was going to bring it to you but well you came to me" Sage said holding up the plate of pancakes.
Sage was also covered head to toe in food. I smiled trying to hide my cringe. " It looks amazing Sage." I said taking the blackened pancakes from her hands. She looked proud of her work and I would not take this moment away from her. The sentiment of it was sweet but good god this breakfast looked awful.
I began mentally preparing myself to eat, I didn't want to hurt her feelings but I wasn't sure if it was even edible. It's just a pancake, it's just a pancake I began repeating in my head as I cut the first bite. Bringing the pancake to my mouth I really began to see how messed up it truly was. Not only was the pancake a very dark brown but it was slightly raw on the inside, the dough being a very thick paste. But nevertheless I continued on placing the pancake into my mouth. I began chewing, the flavors exploding on my tongue.
There was only one word to describe it, sugar. The taste combined with the texture was truly an experience. Not a good one, but still an experience nonetheless. " Oh Sage it's amazing" I said, pasting a big smile onto my face choking down a few more bites. I watched her smile grow, her happiness becoming contagious. " I tried really really hard, I wanted to make you something extra special." She said coming around the island to sit next to me.
I couldn't help but smile at her words making the pancakes taste a little better. " It's certainly the most special breakfast I think i've ever had." I told her, shoving the rest of the pancake into my mouth. She sat up straighter, glowing with pride. I chugged the orange juice washing the taste of burnt sugar out of my mouth. I tried my best to commit the look on her face to my memory, I never wanted to forget this moment.
" You made quite the mess though Miss Sage" I said, taking my plate over to the sink. Sage got up as well, leaving a dusting of flour on the chair " I know, but I'll clean it up I promise." I didn't doubt her one bit, however I wasn't sure if she could take on this mess alone. " How about as a thank you I help?" I offered, starting to wash my plate.
The pancake was surprisingly sticky and clung to the plate. No matter how hard I scrubbed the pancake wasn't moving. "Okay!" Sage chirped, bringing the rest of the dishes over to the sink. This was going to take a while.
Sage and I cleaned for the rest of the day. A few minutes into cleaning we had turned on some music and made a party out of it. The kitchen ended up being quick work, the music and dancing made the time fly. We decided to keep on cleaning, the rest of the house needed some love as well. The day was filled with giggling and jokes. Not to mention the silly dances that we both did to make each other laugh. Sage's favorite was my horrible attempt at the dougie.
Finally the house was spick and span, not a speck of dirt to be seen. At the end of our cleaning montage neither of us felt like doing much of anything. So we decided a movie was how we wanted to spend the rest of our evening. I let Sage pick of course as she had so graciously cleaned with me all day. Her pick was unsurprising, she had recently gotten into the monster inc movies so of course she chose the first one.
I have seen this movie probably a billion times at this point but I didn't mind. It was a cute movie and watching Sages reaction to it was pretty entertaining. Even after watching it numerous times it was still like she was watching it for the first time.
This time though she didn't last through very much of the movie. She ended up passing about 30 minutes into the film. After the pain I got from my night on the couch I wasn't about to let her sleep down here. So I gently scooped her up and began my trek up the stairs.
Slowly I laid her down on her bed, covering her softly with the covers. Clicking the light off I made my way out shutting the door behind me. Deciding it was also time for me to turn in I began my nightly routine, shower, change, brush teeth, and comb hair. Before finally heading off to bed. Laying down I knew that tonight would be the first night in a while that I would get a good night's sleep.
