I was sitting next to Lucas in Chemistry class. I sucked at Chemistry; I hope Lucas was a good partner. He looked super-hot today. He was wearing a gray shirt, which made him so sexy. Actually, he could be wearing a horrible shirt and he still would look totally hot. I hope he didn’t notice that I kept staring at him, but I couldn’t help it.
Suddenly, he turned and faced me and smiled.
‘So, you’re new here right?’ He asked.
My heart started beating faster and for some seconds I forgot how to talk. I swallowed like two times before answering him.
‘Yeah, I’m new. I’m still adapting, but it’s quite normal for me. I am always changing schools.’ I said. I couldn’t take my eyes of his dazzling blue eyes.
‘Well, I hope you don’t leave this school soon, it would be a pity, I still need to know you better.’ He said, then he winked at me and turned around.
OH MY GOSH, was he flirting with me or something like that? No, that would be impossible. We are talking about me, Leila Collins, not the super gorgeous Rebecca.
The class started and the teacher gave us an assignment. Lucas just kept looking at me as I did all the work. I stayed working alone for a long time. I realized I didn’t suck that much at Chemistry, I was understanding nearly everything.
‘Let me help.’ Lucas suddenly said, smiling. Lucas helped me until the end of the class, just speaking sometimes. I shouldn’t even call it helping because we were partners and we should have done it together since the beginning, but I would let this one pass.
‘Well, I think I’m going to like being your partner.’ Lucas said as the bell rang. I just blushed and smiled at him.
As he was leaving the class he winked at me, and I felt my face getting red as a tomato. I stood there looking at Lucas as he left.
‘Wow, you’re so lucky to be his partner.’ A girl said behind me. ‘Hi, my name is Avery, you are Leila right?’
‘Yes, hum, hi Avery.’ I said. She was the first girl that talked to me since I got here. The others that had talked to me were only Rebecca and her nasty friends.
She had long red hair, her eyes were bright blue and very big, she had a pale skin and freckles.
‘So, how is it being lab partner with Lucas?’ The girl asked.
‘Normal. He didn’t help much, he just started helping in the end of the class.’ I answered as we went to the door.
‘Yeah, I should have known. Nobody is perfect, but still, he is very hot.’ The girl said.
‘Yeah, he is.’ I smiled.
‘Hi.’ Jake said. He had chemistry class now, if he was already there that means that I was already running late.
‘Hi Jake, hum, this is Avery. She is in my chemistry class.’ I explained. ‘Avery, this is Jake.’
‘Hello Jake, are you also new? I never saw you before.’ She said smiling.
‘No, I study here for a long time.’ Jake said.
‘Sorry, it’s just that…’
‘It’s okay.’ Jake said smiling. ‘Well, I need to go to class and I think you guys should go too. You don’t want to miss another class, right Leila?’ Jake said looking at me.
‘Yeah, you’re right.’ I said. ‘Well, I have History now. What about you, Avery?’
‘English. See you guys around.’ Avery waved and ran.
I looked at Jake. He was also looking at me.
‘So, I should go.’ I said.
‘Okay.’ He said already going into the classroom; people were still running to their classes.History class passed by very fast. We didn’t sit in groups anymore, so I couldn’t talk to Peter. The teacher asked us to read the whole first chapter and summarize it, so I didn’t even have time to look at him and see what he was doing.
However, I got to glance at him sometimes and he still had the gloomy expression from the first day if class. I think no one could understand what he was feeling, most people might think it was just a high school love, but I could see in his eyes and in Jessica’s eyes, that it was the real deal. I hope that one day someone will love me the way they loved each other.‘So what do you miss more about your old school?’ Class had finished and Jake and I were walking home.
‘I think my friends. I had a lot of friends back there.’ I said smiling, remembering of all my crazy friends. I really missed them.
‘Well, like I already told you, if you start hanging out with me, you won’t have as many friends as you used to have.’ He said.
‘If I have one friend that I can trust and count on, that’s what matters.’ I said.
‘Okay then. I think I match that description.’ Jake said putting his hand on my shoulder.
‘That’s good.’ I smiled. ‘Besides, I really like hanging out with you.’ I said in a low voice, but I think he heard me, because I saw a little smile. When I got home, I started doing my homework while listening to music. My parents hate it that I do my homework while listening to music, but for me, it’s the only way I can concentrate.
When my mom got home, she asked if she could talk to me. I was certain she wanted to talk to me about last week.
‘So, how was school?’ She asked.
‘Everything is going great.’ I smiled.
‘That’s good, I know how you miss your friends.’ She said.
‘I miss them, but I really like it here.’
‘That’s good, I was afraid this change was the reason you were hearing voices again.’ She looked into my eyes.
‘I’m not hearing voices mom; I can ensure you.’ I said trying to make her less worried.
‘I heard you saying Jake’s name that night, but your phone was charging downstairs, so you couldn’t be talking to him.’ Where was she trying to get with that?
‘I don’t think I understand what you mean.’ I said.
‘Nothing.’ She smiled.
‘Mom, Jake is a good friend, don’t worry.’ I smiled.
‘You’ve only known him for two weeks.’ She pointed out.
‘And you don’t even know him.’ I said.
‘Well, you should make more friends. You can’t just hang out with him.’ She stood up.
‘Okay, I’m working on that.’ There was no point in starting a fight. Where would that get me?
‘I’m happy to hear that.’ She smiled. ‘Your dad is buying food, today we’re doing a Mexican night.’I went back to my room and sat down on my big bean bag. Amy, who was sitting in my bed, got up and rested her head on my lap. As I scratched behind her ear, I thought about these last two weeks. So many things happened. I thought it would take some time to find a friend or to start helping a ghost, but it all happened so quickly. Now I have a friend who also talks to ghosts and a ghost who is my friend, and is not trying to kill someone.
Maybe for once everything was going to work out for me. Maybe my luck was changing. Maybe I could be myself without keeping any secrets when I was around my friends.
