Chapter 43

Redd sat frozen on the bed for a few minutes and tried to control his tremors. "Shit," he muttered. His phone slipped from his sweaty paws and thumped on the floor.

"How did I get in there?" He just didn't understand anything anymore. Why did his father called him of all people? And then he asked for such a large amount of money. Something was wrong there.

Redd got up and walked thoughtfully across the room. And now? Should he really go there? What if it was a trap? A kidnapping ?! But ... if he won't come, he would be in trouble, he knew that.

Everyone who knew this cruel fox also knew, that he was not to be trifled with. Redd knew best. He had not been spared beatings in his childhood. His father had taken out his anger on him.

He had yelled at him, insulted him and finally - when Redd was only fifteen years old - threw him out of his own house. His parents had little money and could barely survive. They couldn't take care of him anymore.

What could you do in such a situation? His father decided to throw Redd like a piece of shit on the street. "It's for our best," the bastard had said. "We're better off without you."

And Redd's mother just stood there, had neither took action nor said anything about it. She could not. She was afraid. Afraid of this monster with whom she had shared her life. Redd winced at the painful memories.

He tried desperately to push them aside. No time to ponder the past, he had to think. The old man wanted 40,000 bells from him - for whatever. Redd had the money.

Since he was now selling his self-painted pictures - which of course were not forged - he had already got a lot of bells together. So that shouldn't be a problem. He'll just fly to Bellington and give his father the money.

Then he would leave him alone, right? Redd sat on the bed with a sigh and desperately buried his face in his paws. How is he supposed to explain this to Tom?

Hey, Tom. Do you remember when I told you about my father who threw me out of home? After twenty years he called me and asked for 40,000 bells from me. If I don't give him the money, Te Fiti could be in danger, because he knows I live on this island. So ... I'm in a lot of trouble.

No. He couldn't possibly tell him that. Tom would chase Redd off the island if he knew that Te Fiti and its people could be in danger. Fear crept through his fur. He didn't want to lose Tom, not again.

He just wouldn't say a word about it. Yes. It's better that way. Redd didn't want to worry Tom unnecessarily.
The fox was startled when the door opened and Tom stepped in. "I'm sorry, it took a little longer," the Tanuki said.

"It's okay," Redd muttered weakly. He looked at the floor in silence and didn't dare to look in his boyfriend's eyes. But Tom had already noticed that something was wrong with him. "Are you okay?" He asked worriedly.

"You don't look particularly happy." Redd raised his head and forced a smile. "I'm fine. I'm just pretty tired." Tom sat down next to the fox and held his paw. His look was serious.

"Redd, you can talk to me about everything. If anything is bothering you, tell me. I'm always there for you." These words made Redd so weak that he almost blurted everything out. But he held back.

"It's really cute that you worry about me, but I'm fine, honestly." Now he actually did it. He had lied to Tom. Yet again. Redd had vowed not to lie anymore. Especially not with Tom.

I am so sorry! I really didn't mean to do this, but ...
"If you say so." Tom smiled slightly. "Then I am reassured." So the subject was closed, at least for Tom. He slid onto his side of the bed and snuggled under the covers.

Suprised, he looked at the fox and patted on the blank side next to him. "Do you need an invitation?" He joked. Redd was caught in his dark thoughts again. He was trying to clear his head.

After Redd lay down next to Tom, the Tanuki switched off the light. "Good night, Redd."
"Night, Nooky." He was aware that he would not be able to sleep. It's going to be a sleepless night. Redd slid closer to his boyfriend and snuggled close to him. He needed him now more than ever.

If Tom was with him, nothing could happen to him. Tom would protect him. That thought calmed him. After a few minutes, Redd could actually fall asleep and his worries dissolved like fog.
