"Bye mom!!"

The boy yells as he puts on his rain boots and runs out the door.

"Be careful George! Please just stay in the woods behind the house, don't go any further" his mother shouts.

The boy ran, for he already knew the rules his mother had set.

1. Don't go beyond the woods in the backyard (there's nothing wrong she just doesn't want us to get lost)
2. Don't talk to strangers
3. Wipe your shoes before coming into the house

The boy knew these rules by heart and didn't plan on forgetting them.

The 14 year old kid ran across the stream leading into the woods, his rain boots splashing in the clear water. He knew this place by heart, like a map on the back of his hand, each small hill, each creek, every tree...or so that's what he believed.

Humming a song his mother used to sing him he came across a tree he's never seen (which is surprising since the tree was massive in size)
Branches sprouted from the top with leaves creating a canopy above the young boy.

"woah..."

such a small word to express the biggest astonishment.

The boy then ran home, tracking back his path busting in the front door

"George Davidson! What could possibly be such a big event that you just have to track in the mud off your shoes" His mother yells

He then quickly rips off his shoes, forgetting rule three.

"Mom!! Listen there's this huge tree in the forest do you think dad could help me build a treehouse?? I promise i'll help out and spend time there, it's not a useless project!" The usual quiet boy yells.

George's mother looks back at the boy in shock, for he usually keeps to himself and never expresses what he personally wants to do.

"Well I suppose I could speak with your father.."

"YES! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!"

George then hugs his mother and runs back outside.
This could be the first time looking forward to something could make him so happy.

--queue the tree house making montage--

Him and his father grabbed the supplies they needed. Wood, nails, paints, and so on. George was actually happy being able to create something with his own hands. Something he could say he created, put his own time into.

The sound of a hammer clinking against the wood woke him up from his trance and he got back to work. The feeling of vibrations from the hammer hitting the wood ran up his hands.

"Hey dad?"

"yeah?"

"Thanks for this"

The boys father looks over at him and smiles.
George smiles back,
he knew that meant you're welcome, no words are needed to see the happiness in someone's eyes.

George then got back to work

---Time skip---

He looked up at the treehouse standing above him feeling a sense of pride he's never felt before. He has always stayed low not asking for much, he was afraid asking for things would make him seem selfish. But at this moment, for the first time he was glad he asked.

The wood panels were painted a blue-ish color, a rope ladder leading up to the platform which was surrounded by a small fence.
and his favorite part, by the small door, a simple "do not enter" sign hangs.

This would be his own space, to get away from the chaos, to have some peace and quiet.

yes, my own refuge

The boy thought as he climbed the ladder felling happy for once in his life
