chapter fifty-two

"good morning, jiyoung."

the younger girl bowed respectively to jinae, taking a seat once again in the chair across from her, "good morning."

"let's get straight down to business. you said you wanted to talk to me about something?"

jiyoung shifted in her seat, her palms beginning to grow sticky against the leather seat covering. she nodded, ready to continue.

her brain halted for a moment with hesitation before she could speak but soon enough the words began flowing out in a series, unstoppable.

she told jinae about her eyes and her dream from the previous nights along with the acupuncture vision she had when she was with jeno's mother.

of course, it was quite a bit to take in at first but jinae listened carefully to every word and made sure she understood everything jiyoung was telling her.

after jiyoung finished, they both sat there quietly for a moment until jinae once again spoke up.

"i think we should have you tested for some things. i already know one thing for certainty but to understand what is going on inside of you we must lean a bit more."

"can you tell what's going on with me?" jiyoung asked, looking at jinae as she read over some paperwork she got back from jiyoung's testing.

she nodded as she continued reading, muttering the words under her breath as her eyes followed along.

when she finished, she looked back at jiyoung. she had taken out her blue contact, showcasing her dark black ones. they looked more natural than the fake blue ones.

"you are a prodigy. an air bending prodigy, obviously. it's very amazing and rare for someone to become of such skill but even so, air bending in itself is the hardest for someone to become a prodigy in."

"what does being a prodigy mean?"

none of the others were prodigies. each of them were highly trained and skilled individuals who could pick up on new skills well but they hadn't ever been addressed as prodigies since jiyoung had known them.

"being a prodigy is very different from being a regular bender. prodigies pick up things faster than normal benders, things come easier for them without even having to know much about what they are doing. usually, prodigies possess different sub-genres to their element. for example, fire prodigies are able to produce lighting and create combustions with their mind while regular fire benders can do neither. another thing that only prodigies can do is change the color of their element to match how they are feeling- except for earth."

jiyoung was amazed by her newfound knowledge, surprised she was someone with such a high skill.

"colors match different feelings one has inside as they are bending. for example, when air benders create air scooters or such, the air being used to create it will change according to if the person is happy, sad, angry, annoyed, and so on. when emotions inside are so strong, eye colors will begin to change."

jinae took a breath, scanning over the paper a bit longer before continuing. "it's different for earth bending prodigies, instead of colors being seen in their bending, their eyes have swirls in their pupils when feeling any emotion that would result in other prodigies having color in their bending. when other prodigies begin having swirls in their eyes and bending, earth benders will only always have it in their eyes. usually prodigies are born with their regular respective eye colors to their element. so i'm not very sure why yours are black. if what you're saying is correct, they've always been black, there's more behind them than what i'm reading."

jinae continued explaining to jiyoung everything she knew about prodigies.

"but right now being a prodigy isn't what is making me a bit worried. it's the tests the man you say is your father did to you."

"what's wrong?"

"the tests he ran on you seem to have to do a lot with water benders and their element. you aren't a water bender, so obviously it was very unnatural for your body to take it in. these tests he ran on you... they seem to have made it possible for you to also be able to bend the element of water."
