Standing on a corner
A thin old man holds a sign,
Asking for some money
Hoping to dine.
Pushing his cart back and forth
on the same road
Knocking on car windows
Though no one is willing their wallets to unload.
Standing on the corner
as the summer breezes blow,
the old man basks in the sun
where the flowers grow.
Holding up his sign
Every day he asks for change,
But people walk past
because they think he’s strange.
Standing on a corner
as the leaves fall,
the man can barely stand;
He became a freak show for all.
Cars roll up their windows
and pretend they don’t see
a man who wishes for help
and they ignore his plea.
Standing on a corner
snow falls on the ground.
A man holds a box
from a dump he found.
Parents look with disdain
telling their kids not to turn out that way
by doing their work and getting good grades.
So they nod and obey.
Standing on corner
stood an angel in white
who carried the smiling man
away from the struggle
and into the light.
No more would he have to beg
or be charged by police,
he finally returned home
To rest in peace.
