The quiet beepings of the heart monitor filled the room. Soft scuffling of shoes and bright sunlight. Mina sat on her hospital bed. Her eyes closed, she had lived a long and happy life with Chaeyoung by her side. Now Miyoung ran Myoui Marriages and even got married to the man of her dreams. She had three children. It was a peaceful life. But most of all it was spent with Chaeyoung.
Chaeyoung held on to Mina's hand. The skin sagging and the veins in her hands prominent. But Chaeyoung still found her as perfect as the first day she saw her. Slowly those hazel eyes opened to the world. The first thing they saw was a smiling face.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better now, I don't know what that was."
"It's okay, we're just old!"
"It comes with time I guess." They laughed
Mina had been out tending to her garden when she began to feel pains in her chest and she fell to the floor convulcing. Luckily the window from the kitchen gave a direct view of the backyard and a cooking Chaeyoung was able to tend to her wife quickly. But that made them end up here. In the hospital. It probably wasn't a big deal but just to be sure Mina was being held under monitor for a couple days.
"I remember the times when gardening didn't whip me onto the floor."
Chaeyoung laughed. "Yeah we really did have some fun, didn't we." Chaeyoung looked at the light on the ceiling, her mind whipping through several memories.
"Ahh the Baileys!" Chaeyoung exclaimed
"Yes! who would have though they love their pet rock that much."
"I remember we made actual posters to find it."
"Yeah and the skinny dipping"
"Oh if I did that now, I would die of hypothermia. It's all your fault I went in the water in the first place."
"Hey you shouldn't have let me drink."
"HA"
They sat there in silence watching the particles of dust flying. Until Mina broke the silence.
"We've lived a long and happy life."
"We have baby." Chaeyoung kissed Mina's forehead. "I'm glad it was with you."
"Hey you were stuck with me the moment I put that ring on your finger."
"Yeah haha"
"My father would have loved you."
"I bet I would have liked him too. By now at least."
They laughed, and continued their conversation for hours until Mina fell asleep. Chaeyoung sat on the rocking chair to the side. Watching the serene expression on her wife's face. She had reread the same line in her book six times. So she put the book to the side and decided that some hot chocolate would be nice. Making way to the end of the hall she stopped at a desk and ordered two. One for her and one for Mina. When she got back she found a cat, white with black spots cuddled besides Mina. It was resting just like her.
"Hey there buddy. That's Mina" Chaeyoung spoke. She put the cups to the side and put the cat in her lap as she drank her cup. A few moments later Mina awoke and they shared the cup together chatting and petting the cat. A knock on the door brought their attention to a beautiful woman standing by the frame.
"Miyoung! You made it."
"You didn't have to come dear. I just fell in the garden it's nothing much." Mina said
"I know Mom, just think of it as an excuse to see my dear Moms. I do need something to pull me away from work right."
They laughed, talked, and mused over old memories until night came. Mina had again fallen to sleep.
"Hey Mom I'm going to get some coffee." Miyoung spoke
"Alright, I love you."
"I love you too."
Miyoung walked out the room to the kitchen.
"Hi can I get a cup of your coffee?"
"Yeah of course. But I have to warn you, it's not the best."
"Hmm it's fine I'll take my chances." They laughed. As the girl behind the counter began retrieving the coffee, Miyoung sparked up a conversation.
"I love the cat in our room what's his name?"
"Hmm? Oh Leo? He's in your room?"
Miyoung watched the blood drain from the girls face
"What? You're acting like I've seen a ghost."
"I think you should head back to your family."
"Well that was sudden. Why? What?"
"Actually Leo is our residential cat. He only goes to people who are going to... pass away, to keep them company."
Miyoungs eyes widened. She forgot about everything around her and began on a full sprint to her mother's room. Out of breath she stood by the door frame. She saw Mina and Chaeyoung cuddled in the same bed. The heart monitor had flatlined.
They were both gone. But they left peacefully, in each other's arms, regret free, and most of all happy.
Author's corner:
I didn't mean for this to be a sad chapter. It just symbolizes the end of the story in many ways. I think this is a nice spot to stop at. Thank you all for going through this journey with me. I appreciate all of you. My new story will be out by next week. Keep an eye out for that.
