Even the best souls sometimes waver at the sight of suffering.
Hayley Marshall always had a good heart. And, by gods, the Mikaelsons' suffering was unimaginable.
Kol had long begged them to put him out of his misery, but it was no use. Freya was frantically trying to prepare the spell. She had stabilized Rebekah's curse, but none of them thought it would last for long.
They were running out of time.
"Don't worry, love" Klaus assured Hayley, handing her the letter he wrote for Hope. "The spell will work." A smiled played on his lips, but he could not fool her.
Hayley almost yelled at him. 'How could he have allowed this to happen?' The thought burned her mind as she watched Klaus kiss Hope's forehead. 'How could Klaus live with himself knowing their daughter–his daughter–would grow up without him, without her father?' The words almost left her lips once Klaus put their daughter down in her crib.
She was ready to yell. Tell Klaus they could find another way, tell him to come with them. "The spell would work all the same, wouldn't it?" The phrase played on her tongue, but Hayle could not bring herself to say it.
How could she, when Klaus was not trying to hide his pain as his eyes dwelled on his siblings?
"He has to do it. For them."
Neither Hayley nor Klaus could bear to watch the other Mikaelsons in pain. Elijah's feeble attempts to keep his posture were perhaps more distressing than Kol's creative swearing. Pain devoured them all.
So they both left. Klaus to meet his awful fate and Hayley to get the caskets for the fallen Mikaelsons.
Hayley took Hope with her. The idea of leaving her was more than terrifying. She knew Marcel would never let his vampires harm Klaus's daughter. But a voice from within her heart told her not even Marcel could stop Klaus's sire line from trying to get to their little girl.
She never wondered what type of people wanted Klaus dead. She didn't have to. After all, she had met a handful of good people with more than good reason to want Klaus and all the Mikaelsons dead.
But that doesn't matter anymore. They are her family and she swore to fight for them, for Hope, until her last breath.
Besides, it's not like Hayley was sad with the task her family assigned to her. She got the best one: to raise Hope while looking for the cures for their curses. Hayley wasn't naïve enough to think raising a child on her own while fending off vampires and looking for magical remedies would be easy. It would be bloody hard, obviously. But when Hayley got them all back together.... When Klaus could teach Hope to paint while Elijah played for them; and Freya could help Hope with her magic and Rebekah could finally buy the most gorgeous clothes for her; when Kol and Hope could prank Elijah and Klaus... they all could laughed about it... someday when they became a family again... then every sacrifice will have been worthy it.
Fate, however, had a few more sacrifices to ask from the Mikaelsons. Only this time, it would be so much worse than anything they had ever faced.
As Hayley and Klaus left the Lucien's apartment to meet Fate, a wretched creature crawled underneath their city, slowly wrapping the Mikaelsons in its web... soon it could destroy them all.... Bringing upon the Mikaelsons the type of tragedy only an angel, or a monster, could save them from...
