Chapter 11: Resolve

A few minutes passed, and camp was all set up, complete with a fire in the middle of the floor inside the building which Kai created effortlessly using his semblance.

Weiss: "I can't believe we didn't find anything"

Blake: "We've always been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. I guess we can't always have luck on our side"

Weiss: "That's not what I meant"

Blake: "Huh?"

Weiss: "Earlier, about upholding the legacy. There's more to it than that"

Kai: "Actually I wanted to ask about that. I saw Oobleck talking to you guys before. What was that about?"

Yang: "He...he asked us why we wanted to become huntresses"

Kai: "And?"

Yang: "Well...I mean...I dunno..." she sighed and hung her head

Blake: "Me neither. I mean, I know what I want to do, but I figured I'd always take things one step at a time"

Yang: "Well it doesn't matter, we know why we're here...right?" Kai looked around as the other's faces fell, but before he could say anything, Dr.Oobleck zipped into the room, "Ah wonderful, a textbook campfire"

Ruby: "Fire...so warm" she knelt down beside the flames and began to heat herself up, with Zwei beside her.

Oobleck: "Very good, each of you hurry to bed, we have a lot of ground to cover tomorrow and I'll need you to take turns keeping watch over our temporary abode. Any volunteers for first watch?". Ruby raised her hand, "Yo", before proceeding to stand up and leave to begin her watch. Yang called out to her as she walked past, "Hey, did Oobleck ask you why you wanted to be a huntress? I mean...what did you tell him?"

Ruby: "Hmm, no he didn't. Weird. Oh well goodnight guys" she finally left for her watch. Kai sighed and made his way to a spot near the wall he prepared for himself, while the girls lay arranged around the fire to sleep.

~One Hour Later~

Kai was currently sitting in Ruby's former position, taking the next watch. Ruby herself was fast asleep next to the others by the fire. He suddenly tensed when he heard footsteps, but relaxed when he saw who it was.

Yang: "Mind if I join you?". Kai smiled, "Hey I called second watch first". Yang smiled back, "Yeah well two sets of eyes are better than one. Plus...the company isn't bad". Kai let out a small laugh, "Can't argue with that logic" he turned back to face the deserted town as Yang sat down beside him.

About a minute of comfortable silence passed between them, before Yang spoke up, "I've been thinking...actually we were thinking, about why Oobleck asked us why we wanted to become huntresses"

Kai: "Probably he was just curious, he is a strange one after all". Yang shook her head, "No that wasn't it. I think Oobleck somehow sensed our...lack of resolve"

Kai: "I'm not sure I follow"

Yang: "I mean, we're not actually sure of why we really wanted to become huntresses. Which is probably why we weren't taking this job too seriously before. Ruby's the only one among us with the resolve. Ever since she was a child she's always wanted to be a huntress, to be like the heroes in the books I'd read to her. That's what motivates her to work harder than anyone else. But me...". As her voice trailed off, Kai took her hand, and turned her face with his other hand to gaze into her eyes, "Yang, why did you want to become a huntress?"

Yang: "It's silly really. I'm sure you've probably noticed, but I'm a thrill seeker. I'm a sucker for danger and adventure. If I'm being completely honest, that's the real reason I wanted to be a huntress, because of the thrill of it all. I mean, it's not like I don't want to save people, but it doesn't change the fact that it's why I got into this in the first place"
