27 years after a large asteroid hit the earth, causing major natural disasters, cornering what was left of humanity in a devastated space in Eastern Europe, humans had to find the solution to recover, repopulate and rebuild the Earth, starting with the crystal valley. Will humanity recover, repopulate and rebuild the Earth? Or will they live in the crystal valley forever?

This is fanfiction, a short story that just came to me. I got up on a grey November day and looked out. My city looked very unfriendly and it made me think of the state of our world and of another world, simpler, deeper and more colorful: the Earthsea. I cannot say how much I admire the immense work of Ursula K. Le Guin and how sad I am that there will be no more stories written in her unique brilliant voice. Therefore I dared to imagine one of the characters created by her in our world.

This is a bit of a change for me. It's a post-apocalyptic story, but that doesn't mean it's depressing. As with most of my stories this one is optimistic (even if it does begin with the main characters feeling a little melancholy). As usual, I try to make the science in my science fiction as accurate as possible. No wild flights of fancy in my stories. I've finally changed the name from "Photosynthesis" to the more satisfactory "Breathe". If anybody cares to suggest something even better I would be very grateful. You would be credited in the acknowledgements. I've come up with more than a dozen names, but I'm not completely happy with any of them. Let me know what you think of the story. If you see any errors, please point them out to me so I can fix them. I'll be posting installments from time to time as I write them. I have most of the story mapped out already. Unlike many writers I don't seem to be able to fly by the seat of my pants. Mapping the story out in some detail seems to be a necessity for me. Enjoy.
