08. an ingenious plan

CHAPTER EIGHT
AN INGENIOUS PLAN

CORA BLYTHE WAS flustered. She knew now that Winifred returned her feelings for her, but could she chase her heart at the cost of her dear brother? She knew that her brother and Anne were soulmates, and she knew that Winifred was hers. But how could she make Winifred hers if she was still with her brother? Cora smirked as a plan began to formulate in her mind.

She put on an ocean blue dress and called out to her family that she was visiting the Cuthberts' and they happily acknowledged her words. "Oh and Gil, there's some crop to be inspected in the barn, could do you that for me while I'm gone?" Cora asked innocently, and Gilbert agreed.

Cora then proceeded to run to Green Gables as fast as she could, panting softly as she reached. "Anne!" She shouted as she entered the Cuthberts' household.

"Dear me! Cora you gave me a scare!" Marilla exclaimed as she looked at the young brunette in front of her.

"Where might Anne be?" Cora questioned desperately.

"Why up in her room of course!" Marilla said, slightly annoyed.

"Well, she is to spend the day with us and we are not taking no for an answer." Cora said and smiled at the older woman.

Marilla sighed in defeat as Cora ran upstairs, brought Anne downstairs and rushed out the door.

"Cora, where are you taking me?" Anne questioned excitedly.

"I have a plan. And a good one too." Cora smirked at Anne. "Oh Cor, your plans are never good.." Anne whispered under her breath, but thankfully Cora did not hear her. The pair reached the barn and as Anne paused to catch her breathe from the long walk, Cora opened the back entrance and pushed her in, locking all the doors of the barn.

"A-Anne? What are you doing here?" A male voice questioned.

"G-Gilbert?"

Cora smirked in triumph.

About two hours later, Cora unlocked the barn door, only to find Gilbert and Anne kissing passionately.

"I-I..er.. Wow." Cora said, feigning surprise as a very flustered Anne and Gilbert jumped apart from each other, both their cheeks the color of Anne's hair.

The three of them shared awkward glances for a moment, before Cora started sniggering, the pair mirroring her actions about two seconds later.

"My brother and my best friend.. Well this calls for a celebration." Cora chuckled, "Bash keeps the alcohol in the medicine cabinet."

"CORA!" Gilbert and Anne exclaimed at the same time before Cora burst into laughter, "Calm down guys-I was only joking."

Comfortable silence entered the barn, right before Cora motioned Gilbert to her, and as he came closer to her she whispered, "Let Winifred down easy.. You may not love her Gil, but I do.."

Gilbert's eyes widened slightly as he whispered back, "She's all yours Cor, and don't worry, I will."

Cora turned back to the pair and started, "If either of you break each other's hearts, then I will not have mercy on you. Trust me on this one."

Anne and Gilbert looked bewildered and soon Gilbert spoke, "Anne, Cora, I have to go and end the courtship with Winifred.. I'll see you two later." He pecked Anne on the cheek and rapidly exited the barn, leaving Anne and Cora alone. Cora shrieked and embraced Anne tightly, "We shall become sisters soon!"

Anne immediately turned beet red, "C-Cora who said anything about marriage..I-er..We just started courting, well not even officially yet but-"

"Anne. It was a joke." Cora said while chuckling lightly.

"Your humourless jokes will be the death of me, Cor." Anne shook her head.

"Then I shall die too, and we can haunt all of Avonlea together: especially Billy Andrews and Josie Pye!" Cora exclaimed lightheartedly.

"You're impossible Cora Eloise Blythe."

"But you love me anyway."

"Damn right I do."
